Oklahoma School for the Deaf is located in Sulphur, Ok, an hour and half south from Oklahoma City and two and half hours north from Dallas. It is near Chickasaw National Recreation Park. OSD is a four day school during the school year from August to May with several week breaks for Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring as well as summer. OSD also offers a summer camp program in June with extra pay. OSD is a bilingual environment promoting ASL and English on the campus. FIRST-DESTINATION SURVEY CAPTURES OUTCOMES FOR ALL DEGREE LEVELS, PROVIDES TRENDS DATA - NACE

NACE’s First-Destination Survey captures information regarding how new college graduates fare in their careers within six months of graduation. The annual initiative provides clear, concise, and consistent data on the outcomes associated with a college education on a national scale. Outcomes include 1) types of employment—full or part time, contract, freelance, and so forth; 2) additional education, e.g., accepted to graduate or professional school; 3) still seeking either employment or further education; 4) and starting salary for those employed full time.

In addition to providing outcomes for individual classes, the First-Destination Survey is designed to provide trends data over time to inform the discussion about the value of higher education.

Each December, Handshake will choose 10 students from participating schools to receive $250 Amazon gift cards.

The graduate Education of the Deaf Program is in the College of Health Sciences, in the Department of Communication Sciences and Oral Health. The department is comprised of Education of the Deaf, Speech Language Pathology (Communication Sciences) and Dental Hygiene (Oral Health) programs.

Because of TWU’s rigorous and challenging Deaf Education program, I feel fully prepared for my new career as a D/HH Parent-Infant Advisor. TWU’s program also deepened my understanding of myself and improved my self-advocacy skills as a profoundly deaf adult.

When I started TWU’s Deaf Education program 3 years ago, I had zero experience in the education field, very little experience with technology, and had been out of school for 30+ years. I could not have made it through without the encouragement and support of my amazing professors.

Thank you, Dr. Allman, for reaching out to inform me about TWU’s program, your encouragement throughout my journey, and your help in re-working my degree plan multiple times to accommodate my family and work life. Your Reading and Language courses hooked me from the beginning. I’m glad they were my first courses!

Dr. Wainscott, I loved your structured, self-paced Audiology and Families courses. Obviously, all I have learned from you will be invaluable to my dream career as a D/HH Parent-Infant Advisor. Thank you!

Dr. Chad Smith, your courses challenged me the most and made me want to give up the most, but they also produced the most growth in me. Thank you for encouraging me to keep going and convincing me that I had something to offer the deaf education world as a profoundly deaf adult.

Ms. Kim Piering, your classes were my favorites! I learned so many tools for my toolbox and great classroom management tips. Your courses were the most fun for me.

Recent graduate Grace Wainscott:
I’m currently a deaf-Ed Pre-School teacher in Plano ISD. I just started my 3rd year of teaching, second of pre-k. I graduated from the master’s program in May of 2023!!

I cannot say enough good things about the TWU graduate program, specifically our deaf education program. I started the program right after I graduated with my bachelors in May of 2021, and had already begun my first year of teaching.

Not only were the things that we were learning and doing applicable to my every day, but there was also this ongoing collaboration with my cohort that allowed me to ask all the questions! The wonderful professors really walked alongside me that first year (and the next), through all the challenges and celebrations. There’s encouragement, support, helpful feedback, collaboration, and a healthy challenge. I felt like I belonged on a team, where everyone wanted me to be a great teacher and have continued to help me be a great teacher.

When I started TWU’s Deaf Ed grad program, I was starting my first year of teaching in Mesquite RDSPD’s elementary life skills class, and I had 2 year old and 4 month old daughters at home. 2 years later and I’m finally done!

In full transparency, it was a long, hard 2 years. There were several times when I seriously thought I wasn’t going to be able to finish. However, with the help of my little village and the Deaf Ed department’s amazing professors, who were always full of grace and understanding, we’re finally here!

I am now in my third year of teaching— year 2 of teaching 5th grade in Mesquite RDSPD. Home is still just, if not more, crazy with our almost 4 year, 2.5 year, and 8 month old little girls, but I wouldn’t have it any other way! I am glad to have school off my plate for a little while, but I do have my eyes on my next degree in the near future!

I thoroughly enjoyed the deaf education program at TWU. In two years, I earned a master's degree, met some amazing people, and gained an incredible amount of knowledge and experience in my field of work. I currently work as an itinerant teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing in a Louisiana public school system. Every day as a ToDHH, I use the tools and advice that was given to me from professors and cohorts at TWU. I'd like to give special acknowledgements to:
Dr. Tamby Allman - for always advising me and supporting me both as a student and a professional in my own career. Your guidance has been invaluable.
Dr. Leanna Hodges - for tons of emotional support and never-ending encouragement.

Help us celebrate our 2023 deaf education graduates starting with Amy Bennett!

Since graduating from TWU, I am now working with Fort Worth ISD as a 4th grade Deaf Education teacher!
There is a rumor I may or may not be deciding on my next degree, lol.
I will be spending my next birthday, as always, in the most magical place on earth!
