UNT Department of Communication Studies The Department of Communication Studies at UNT offers the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in Communication Studies.

Communication Studies is an exciting field of study. Unlike some professional degrees where students train to perform a particular job, students who major in Communication Studies prepare for a variety of career opportunities. Through our degrees, which are constructed on a strong liberal arts foundation, we equip our students with the theories, skills, and training that allow them to adapt to the demands of the 21st century marketplace.

Is there a doctor in the house? Or maybe TWO!

We’re always so proud to celebrate our alums when they achieve their goals! This summer, two of our alums earned their Ph.D.s and we love seeing them flourish!

Dr. Damla Ricks (UNTCOMM MA, 2011) successfully defended her dissertation this summer earning her Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Counseling from Texas Wesleyan University. Dr. Ricks is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Texas, Arlington in Communication Studies and a certified licensed counselor. Dr. Ricks completed a MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, opening a private counseling practice in 2021.

Jacinta Tran (UNTCOMM MA, 2022 & UNTCOMM BA, 2020) leveled up to Dr. Jacinta Tran in July when she defended her dissertation examining the role of children who serve as caregivers for their aging parents. Since earning her Ph.D. in Communication Studies from the University of Texas, Dr. Tran returned to the DFW metroplex and has joined the faculty at Dallas College.

Congratulations Dr. Ricks and Dr. Tran!

Here's to a wonderful new year of classes!
