We honor and remember the 20th anniversary of September 11, 2001, also known as Patriot Day, when the world was irrevocably changed. A day whose tragic reach continues to impact the lives of even our youngest Delta Zeta members, many of whom were not yet born. Among those we lost were two Delta Zeta sisters:

• Alicia Titus, Alpha – Miami, a flight attendant on United Airlines Flight 175.
• Melissa Vincent, Omicron Theta – SUNY/Oswego, who worked for Alliance Consulting Group, 102nd Floor of the World Trade Center.

Please join us in remembering our sisters and those closer ones, including friends and family members affected by this tragic day, whose love was, and continues to be, ever steadfast.

Congratulations to Delta Zeta alumna Melanie Renaud, Omicron Nu-University of Windsor, for being crowned Miss Galaxy Canada!

When asked about her journey to being crowned Miss Galaxy Canada, Melanie shared how her experiences as a member of Delta Zeta have helped shape her into the woman she is today.

"While in the interview room I was asked how I had grown as a person during my time away from pageants. It had been over six years since I was last on a pageant stage. I mentioned how joining Delta Zeta changed me in so many ways. Through Delta Zeta, I gained an entire network of inspiring women around me. I had the opportunity to lead as president and help members of my chapter succeed in leadership as well. During my interview, I also wore the silver angel necklace I received from my Delta Zeta Starkey Hearing Mission to Guatemala and told the judges how that experience of helping over 800 patients, hearing their stories and seeing a child hear for the first time inspired me to live my life more purposefully and opened my eyes to how much change can be made by just one person. I am so thankful for the many opportunities that Delta Zeta has given me and how those life experiences led me to becoming not only a leader in my local community but also in my national community. I am so proud to be a Delta Zeta and I am honored to share my win with my amazing sisters and the sorority that has given me so much."

Over the next year, Melanie will travel internationally representing her country, with the rest of Team Canada Galaxy 2022, as she continues to be a positive role model for women, work with charitable causes and compete for the Miss Galaxy International title.

It began with five words, “Hi, my name is Kay.” Those words were both an introduction and an invitation to friendship that would span more than five decades.

There were four of us who became Delta Zeta sisters and formed a bond that has shared marriages, births, deaths, birthdays and a lot of wine! We console each other, contradict each other, counsel each other and criticize each other. We have few boundaries but care deeply for each other.

Over the years we have met for sister retreats. One of our most memorable reunions was our 50-year friendship train trip to Richmond, Virginia. . . More recently, one of our group, Kay, yes, the one who started it all years ago, was diagnosed with cancer. In some ways, it has been as if we all were diagnosed. This cancer journey has shown us both the fragility and preciousness of life and of our friendships.

Because of cancer and COVID, we Facetime each week. It has become our virtual reunion place. In this time of quarantine and unrest, it is these deeply rooted friendships that sustain us. They are strong and dependable and for that we are unbelievably grateful.

Rethinking Hospital Fashion

Eleven years ago, Lauren Bellflower, Zeta Kappa-Ohio Northern, was in the hospital for an overnight stay for the first time due to Crohn’s Disease. She was nervous and uncomfortable. She just wanted to rest, get the medicine she needed and prepare for surgery. She was stuck in a hospital gown thinking how horrible they were. Fast forward years later and she took her experience and created Hospital Hoodies - a comfortable, warm, hoodie that you can wear and is friendly to medical treatment. Lauren had to resign her membership while an undergraduate member of DZ because of her illness. She loves Delta Zeta so much that she requested National Council to reinstate her membership as an alumna. Today Lauren is a member and officer of two alumnae chapters. Find out more about her efforts at www.hospitalhoodies.com.

Emmy winning alumna alert! Congratulations to Bridget (Chalupsky) Naso, Epsilon Epsilon-California State University/Fresno, on her recent Emmy Award for Outstanding Team Coverage in San Diego! Bridget is a television broadcast anchor and reporter with NBC7 San Diego. She anchors weekend evenings with Omari Fleming.

In a past interview with San Diego Women's Week she shared her career advice for women:

"Find a career you are passionate about. Then find successful people in that industry to help guide you along the way. To survive in a highly competitive field you must have determination and skill. You must be at the top of your game in the job you are doing, while at the same time creating a path to your next opportunity. Remember sometimes climbing straight up that ladder won’t get you where you want to go, so don’t be afraid to leap over to another ladder nearby to make it to the top!"
