The WMGF Committee applications are now open! Visit the link in our bio to apply to be on a committee of students and staff that vote on which environmentally-based projects get funding from the Environmental Service Fee. UNT students at half or full time in good standing with the university and a GPA over 2.5 can apply. Please reach out to [email protected] if you have any questions or need any reasonable accommodations to submit this application. Applications are due November 3rd at noon (12pm).

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! To celebrate, here are some images of a prickly pear cactus, a plant that is native to many Hispanic countries, such as Mexico and Honduras, and right here in Texas. Prickly pears (genus Opuntia), in addition to being a beautiful plant and a great host for many insects, also have some material uses to humans.

The nopales (or pads) of some species are edible and prominent in Mexican cuisine. Additionally the fruit is enjoyed globally in salads, smoothies, baked goods, or just on their own. Remember: never eat something you forage unless you are 100% sure it is from an edible variety and that it has not been treated with harmful chemicals.

These plants aren't only used for eating: they also harbor a bug called cochineal, which is used to make a vibrant red dye.

Looking for something to do between classes? Come to our come-and-go native bed workdays every Tuesday and Thursday 9:30-11am to learn about landscaping and plant identification! Meet at the outdoor Starbucks (located in Lot 1 or South of the Life Sciences Complex) to join in! Wear close-toed shoes and we will provide everything else.

Would you like to help maintain our native flower beds on campus? Come to our weekly workdays! Starting next week (8/19/25), meet us at the outdoor Starbucks stand on Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:30am-11am to dig, plant, trim, and mulch these beautiful pollinator spaces!
