Email [email protected] The Speech, Language, Hearing Sciences Department (SLHS) at MSU Denver is committed to teaching students about communication and its disorders as well as serving those who are impacted by speech, language, and/or hearing disorders. Our department offers a range of options, in line with the different ways we communicate and the communicative challenges that arise acr

oss the lifespan. For students exploring the area, we offer introductory courses that cover topics from how children acquire language to how a speech disorder like stuttering is different from a language disorder like aphasia. For declared majors and post-baccalaureate students, we offer advanced coursework in the scientific foundations of communication as well as advanced study of speech, language, and hearing disorders. SLHS alums often pursue graduate degrees, the entry-level requirement to be certified as speech-language pathologists or audiologists – two in-demand professions that are ranked among the best jobs in healthcare. For students looking to pursue a graduate degree, we offer a rigorous full-time MS SLP program in which academic coursework is infused with clinical experiences. A new cohort will matriculate each summer. Students can expect to finish the standard MS SLP 23 months after program start. We link classroom to clinic by offering real-world experiences throughout our program. With small class sizes, expert professors and the most affordable tuition in the state, the SLHS department at MSU Denver is your gateway to communication sciences and its disorders. StammerTalk began in 2020 as a small, peer-led online support group for Mandarin speakers who stutter, originally found via social media. Now, it has grown to nearly 1,000 members from Chinese-speaking communities worldwide, including China, the U.S., Canada, and parts of Europe. 🗣️🙌🌏👩‍💻
"Participants have reported increased willingness to communicate, reduced feelings of isolation, and greater self-acceptance. People who used to only listen and stayed silent during meetings have become active contributors and peer leaders. Parents have shifted from seeking ways to “fix” stuttering in their child to exploring more supportive and acceptance-based approaches." -Bin, Cheng. To tackle local SLP shortages, some grad programs in rural areas are rolling out a "grow-your-own" model called COMET (Candidates, Opportunities, Mentorship, Experiences, and Team), filling dozens or even hundreds of openings. 🗣️✨🚞🙌
"Grow-your-own models require patience and intentional investment, but the return is significant. Districts gain committed, community-centered professionals who are more likely to stay and serve long-term. In rural education, where continuity matters deeply, investing in people who already call the community home isn’t just a strategy—it’s a solution." -Meeks.
