We recently hosted students from across 17 institutions to attend The New Era Workshop (NEW) at the end of September. Organized through Bridging the Gap, NEW is an annual three-day training program for PhD students in international affairs and related disciplines.

Throughout the workshop, participants engaged with a series of foreign policy experts and “gap bridgers” about scenario analysis, responsible engagement, effective public communication, and pursuing careers across the academia/policy divide.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Meredith J. DeBoom to the Josef Korbel School of Global and Public Affairs as our newest assistant professor!

DeBoom's research on global energy politics, climate justice, and the tension between economic necessity and sustainable development was shaped by her childhood days working on her family's farm in Iowa, research with the Iowa state legislature, and a summer at the U.S. Embassy in Namibia.

This academic year, she's teaching Environmental Geopolitics (Winter Quarter) and Environment, Economy, and Development (Spring Quarter).

We're so excited to have her join our faculty!

Before DU, studying abroad wasn't something Eli Barbour, a third-year International Studies student at Korbel, had seriously considered. But as Eli started learning Arabic his first year at Korbel, he knew he wanted to study in an Arabic-speaking country.

Now he's all packed up for a semester abroad in Morocco, and he took us along for the early stages of getting ready for his travels!

Colorado is coming off one of its driest summers on record, and the stakes around water conservation and governance have never felt more urgent.

Two Josef Korbel School of Global and Public Affairs alumni are on the front lines of that work. Michael Thomas (Master of Public Policy '11), Senior Water Efficiency Planner at Northern Water, helps municipalities across Northern Colorado audit aging infrastructure and build rebate programs to cut water waste. Kimberly Lemme (MA International Economic Development '04) has spent more than two decades expanding access to clean water and sanitation, both internationally and across the U.S.

Both point to the same truth: water scarcity isn't just a technical challenge, it's a governance one. As Colorado and the broader West navigate an uncertain water future, solutions depend on collaboration across disciplines, communities, and institutions.
