Iliff School of Theology hosted its inaugural preaching conference, "Preaching in an Age of Contempt," September 15-17, 2026, gathering preachers, teachers, and ministry leaders in Denver for renewal, courage, and community in the work of proclaiming the Gospel.

The program featured worship, lectures, sermons, and workshops from leaders including Rev. Dr. William Willimon, Rev. Dr. Miguel De La Torre, Rev. Dr. Suzan Johnson Cook, and Rev. Dr. Joy J. Moore, exploring how preaching can build trust, rest, and imagination, and can proclaim truth without contempt. Across the three days, participants also enjoyed shared meals, music, and fellowship.

All were reminded, in the words of Mountain Sky UMC Bishop Kristin Stoneking, that this sacred work is done "not alone, but together."

Iliff welcomed our incoming class of 2026-2027 graduate students during our Opening Convocation ceremony in September. We celebrated and heard from our two new faculty members, Dr. Candice NunnTelfort and Rev. Dr. George Schmidt, who spoke on Spiritual Care.

For 48 years, CBWPA has celebrated Black women's leadership and civic power. Members of Iliff's staff and faculty attended the 48th Annual Tribute to Black Women event, honoring the Sachs Foundation, 5280 Black Women in Business, the The Redress Movement, the Black Arts Movement, and Top Teens of America: organizations and movements carrying Black women's leadership into policy, culture, and community life.

In attendance to celebrate this year's theme "Forward Together: Power, Policy & Possibilities" — Iliff's President & CEO Dr. Lee H. Butler, Jr., with Denver City Council member Darrell Watson and Congresswoman Brittany Petterson, with Iliff's Dean of Students Rev. Dr. Diane Bogues giving the Invocation, Iliff Alum Daryl Walker ʼ21 directing the choir, and new faculty member Rev. Dr. Candice NunnTelfort, with Councilman Watson representing Iliff School of Theology.

What does the Book of Acts have to say about political violence, oppression, and the abuse of power?

Drawing from two new books on power, violence, and the Book of Acts, Iliff’s Associate Professor of Early Christian Texts and Traditions, Rev. Dr. Eric C. Smith, will explore how patterns of power in Acts echo in our world today. Drawing on the experiences of Jesus’ first followers, we’ll identify strategies for resisting power and violence while building community, sharing resources, finding common purpose, and bridging differences.

The 2026 C. Shelby Rooks Lecture welcomes back the Rev. Dr. Lee H. Butler, Jr., President and CEO of Iliff School of Theology and former distinguished faculty member at CTS, for “From Revolution in Zion to Singing the Lord's Song in a Strange Land.”

During his time at CTS, Dr. Butler founded the Center for the Study of Black Faith and Life and inaugurated the C. Shelby Rooks Lectureship. His return offers an opportunity to honor a legacy of theological reflection, critical inquiry, and engagement with faith and public life.
