Today's the birthday of social justice and gender equity activist and founder of the Me Too movement Tarana Burke.

Tarana Burke (born September 12, 1973) began her life of community organizing at a young age. In the late 1980s, she joined a youth development organization called 21st Century, where she worked to address issues faced by young girls in her community, including racial discrimination, housing inequality and economic justice.

In college, she organized press conferences and protests regarding economic and racial justice. Afterward, when she moved to Selma, Alabama, she was inspired to turn her attention to supporting survivors of sexual violence. A survivor of sexual violence herself, she was able to identify personally with the stories of the girls and women she worked with.

Realizing that too many girls were dealing with abuse without access to resources, safe spaces and support, she founded Just Be Inc., an organization that promotes the wellness of young Black and brown girls, who face additional barriers to support because of their race.

In 2006, she founded the Me Too movement, using the phrase "Me Too" to raise awareness of just how pervasive sexual abuse and assault is in our society, and how Black women and girls are disproportionately affected.

Over a decade later, in 2017, became a viral hashtag when Alyssa Milano and other women began using it to tweet about the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse cases. The phrase and hashtag quickly developed into a broad-based, and eventually international movement.

The Me Too Movement continues to work to help survivors on their journey of healing, providing online and in-person training courses for community groups, college students and administrators, and other organizations, as well as offering online resources for anyone looking to learn more about sexual violence and ways to address it.

Tarana Burke was dubbed one of "the silence breakers" as the Time Person of the Year for 2017. In addition to her work with Me Too, she is also the Senior Director at Girls for Gender Equity in Brooklyn, and frequently gives public presentations at events across the country.

She just released her autobiography, 'Unbound: My Story of Liberation and the Birth of the Me Too Movement' which you can find on the NWHA Bookshop page: https://bookshop.org/a/5044/9781250621740

Good Read: https://mindworks.org/blog/what-is-walking-meditation/

We don’t need a special set-up to meditate. We can practice mindfulness meditation while sitting at the desk, doing the dishes or taking a walk. Mindful walking meditation is a perfect complement to our seated meditation practice – it’s “meditation in motion.” And walking meditation is gre...
