As we end our week of online classes, KME would like to welcome everyone back for Fall 2020! While we may not be able to see everyone in person, we're looking forward to the opportunities this hybrid semester will represent. Recruitment is coming up fast, so keep an eye out for more information!

Stay safe, wear a mask, and start this semester off positive!

This week I'd like to talk about a Senior Member in Kappa Mu Epsilon!

His name is Neil Bhakta and he joined KME in the Fall of 2019. He is studying Mathematics (đź’ś) and Computer Science and plans to work as a software developer after his graduation in May, but he also plays tennis, volleyball and rock climbs.

His favorite thing about KME is the people at the events.
Good luck with the rest of the semester Neil! You'll do great!

The Fall 2019 KME Lecture Series was a success! On Tuesday November 12th Professor Adam Case from the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science presented on Algorithmic Information!

We learned about what Algorithmic Information was and how it contributes to Pure Mathematics, although the subject is treated as only concerning Computer Science.

Professor Case eloquently lead us through the history of this theory, what Kolmogorv Complexity* was and the impacts of this entire branch of computer science. (among other things)

*a concept which helps quantify the complexity of a mathematical object

This afternoon Su Ji Hong, a UNL graduate student, gave a presentation on Total Positivity of Matrix and Cluster Algebras. We learned how to prove that there are an infinite number of combinations of positive integers x1, x2, and x3 such that:

3*x1*x2*x3 = x1^2 + x2^2 + x3^2

Su Ji Hong showed us how to prove this using graph theory (quivers) and minors of matrices.

It was an absolute blast! I hope everyone learned a lot. If you couldn't make it to this event make sure to stay tuned for what we have coming up!

With classes starting tomorrow, we have one final KME Summer Update! Today we are featuring our current Vice President, Liz Rambhia!

Liz Rambhia is a rising senior with double majors in Mathematics and Mathematics Secondary Education and a Computer Science minor!

Here's a quote from Liz about her summer experience:
"This summer I was a returning intern to Travelers Insurance in their Business Intelligence & Geospatial internship program in Saint Paul, Minnesota. I had the opportunity to work within the third party and internal databases for their Business Insurance department. Using SQL, I led a data profiling project and assisted a fellow intern to automate reports. I met so many amazing women in STEM through their Women's Diversity Network!"

We cannot wait to see Liz and the rest of our members on campus tomorrow as we kickoff this semester!

Stay tuned throughout the fall for recruitment, events open to the public, and more highlights of the amazing things our members are doing everyday!

Today for our Summer Update we are featuring Megan Taggart!

Megan is a rising senior majoring in Data Analytics with an Actuarial Science concentration and a minor in English!

This summer she had the wonderful oppportunity to be a business analytics intern at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City!

We are so proud of Megan and all of our members for the impressive work they have been doing this summer and we can't wait to welcome everyone back to campus in the coming days!

Today we are featuring our current Treasurer Joseph Beckmann!

Joe is a rising senior majoring in Mathematics with a minor in Biology, is in his second year as our Treasurer, and is also a member of the LGBTQ community!

This summer he has been in Los Angeles doing research at UCLA!

Here's some more information from Joe about his work:
"I'm studying the mycelial networks formed by fungi by taking pictures of these networks with a microscope, then using image analysis software to extract graphs from these images. I will then use graph theory to study the properties of these networks."

He just finished up his final report this past week and is now ready for his senior year at Drake! We can't wait to see Joe, our other members, and the rest of campus back on Monday!

Stay tuned the rest of the week as we highlight more of what our members have spent the past 3 months on!

Our second edition of the summer update features rising senior Kaitlin Palko!

Kaitlin is majoring in Data Analytics with minors in Mathematics and Computer Science. This summer she is at The Waldinger Corporation in Des Moines as a Data Analyst Intern where she has been working on fleet replacement models and data visualizations to support their current reports!

Kaitlin says, "Overall, this summer has been incredibly rewarding, and I am looking forward to what senior year has to offer!"

We can't wait to see what this year has to offer either!! See you all in one week!

As the summer is winding down we wanted to update you on some of the amazing things that our members have been doing these past few months!

Today we're featuring Sydney Walther who is a rising senior double majoring in Actuarial Science and Mathematics!

"This summer I have had the amazing opportunity working in the pricing department as an actuarial intern at BlueCross BlueShield of Texas in my hometown of Richardson (suburb of Dallas). I have grown in my data analysis skills using Excel, VBA, and SQL to compare the prices of our plans to our competitors’ plans. I have met intelligent and friendly professionals in the field and am sad to leave so soon!" - Sydney

Stay tuned this week as we update you with more of the wonderful opportunities KME members have had this summer. We can't wait to see everyone back on campus in a few weeks!
