Our next social media shout out features Senior Articles Editor, Aaron Miller!

Why did you join Law Review?
I joined law review to improve my writing skills. During my undergraduate education I studied finance and I didn't do a whole lot of writing, so I had a lot of catching up to do. Of course, being a great writer is essential to becoming a great lawyer.

What have you most liked about being a member of Wayne Law Review?
I enjoy working with fellow classmates who I may one day work with (or against) in practice. Law review has been a great way to know more of my classmates and expand my network.

What area/type of law are you hoping to practice after law school?
After graduating law school I will start my career at the firm of Jaffe Raitt Heuer & Weiss. At Jaffe, I will be working in the Corporate practice group advising clients on Mergers & Acquisition and other transactional matters.

What has been your favorite law school memory so far?
My favorite memory of law school was horse playing around in the study rooms with Matt Fleming, Allison Tuohy, and Kate Smigelski during 1L year. We barely got anything done and my readings took way longer than it should have, but I wouldn't trade those fun times for anything.

What is your proudest law school achievement so far?
My proudest achievement in law school is being able to make it to my final semester of law school while keeping my sanity. As many know, law school is very challenging and takes a huge toll on you mentally. However, I will admit that there has been a significant increase in grey hair growth on my head since starting law school.

Do you have any fun hobbies that you do to keep sane/take a break from school?
I am a huge sports fan. If I'm not doing stuff for school, I always have some type of sports playing on my TV. I look forward to seeing how the NFL playoffs play out in the coming weeks.

Our next social media shout out goes to Senior Note & Comment Editor, McKenna Thayer!

What was your Note topic?
My Note explores how white students applying to college in Michigan are systemically favored through their relation to alumni and faculty and standardized test scores during admissions, which violates the Michigan Constitutional ban on affirmative action. I explore how various outcomes from impact litigation could create opportunities for universities to increase representation of Black, Indigenous, and other students of color on campus.

What area of law are you hoping to practice after law school?
I am excited to be a Public Defender after law school!

What other organizations are you involved in at Wayne, and what have you gained from those?
I'm on the AAJ National Mock Trial Team, the Mock Trial E-Board, and last year worked as a board member for the National Lawyers Guild. I've also been on the Women's Law Caucus board and am a Legal Observer. The Mock Trial program, especially the National Team, has given me invaluable experience in trial advocacy. The number of reps you get being on a national team is unmatched. We go through so many trials, practicing everything from closing arguments to cross examination to voir dire of expert witnesses. I feel confident in my understanding of the practical application of the rules of evidence and my trial organization and argument skills. NLG has connected me to so many people in the Detroit community, and I'll forever be proud of Wayne NLG's involvement in the Black Lives Matter protests. From organizing, to legal observing, to protesting I am proud and grateful for the support system and solidarity we have built. I'm just thankful to be a part of such an important movement.

What is your proudest law school achievement so far?
My proudest achievement so far was being honored as a National Lawyers Guild Student Honoree for my organizing work during the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020. I'm also humbled to have worked with all 4 holistic public defense organizations in Detroit during my time in law school (Neighborhood Defenders Service, the State Appellate Defender Office clinic, Federal Community Defenders, and the Detroit Justice Center). It has been an honor to be welcomed into these communities and I'm so proud of the work that these organizations do and I'm thankful I could be a part of it.

Do you have any fun hobbies that you do to keep sane/take a break from school?
I am a fierce advocate for safeguarding hobbies during law school! I am an avid knitter (I mostly make sweaters. You'll often catch me knitting during zoom law classes to help keep my focus from wondering, and if I'm in wearing something knit you can bet I made it myself!). I play volleyball several nights a week with the Detroit Volleyball Club (COVID permitting), and my husband and I love to backpack and do extended kayaking trips in the backcountry (we are currently "collecting" National Parks!).
