Global Talent Retention Initiative of Michigan (GTRI)

Global Talent Retention Initiative of Michigan (GTRI) GTRI focuses on strengthening and diversifying the state's economy through the retention of top international talent. For more info visit www.migtri.org

By retaining international students, GTRI is a catalyst to lessening the skills gap in the STEM fields especially, and cultivating a climate in which Michigan businesses can be competitive in the new economy. GTRI collaborates with the Governor's office, the Office for New Americans, Global Detroit, over 30 Michigan Universities, the University Research Corridor (URC), the American Immigration Law

yers Association (AILA), Michigan's economic development agencies, ethnic chambers, professional organizations, and employers throughout the state. GTRI is funded by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and the New Economy Initiative (NEI), and is housed in partnership with Prima Civitas. GTRI was originally formed as a result of the Global Detroit Study about the impact of immigrant talent on the region’s economy. Studies have shown that immigrants disproportionately contribute to economic growth, employment, and wage gains. In addition, more than 50% of PhDs and sometimes as much as 40% of master’s degrees in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics) are awarded each year in the U.S. to international students. Since IT and engineering are the fastest growing industries, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find qualified candidates for high level tech positions if international students are not considered as part of an employer’s applicant pool. GTRI provides international students and local employers with training and resources on relevant immigration regulations, information on finding a job in Michigan, and help with cross-cultural issues that both employers and international applicants may experience during the hiring process.

We’re thrilled to honor Jimmy Hsiao, CEO of Logic Solutions with the Immigrant Impact award at Tapestry, Global Detroit’s Annual Celebration!

Jimmy grew up in Taiwan and came to the U.S. as an international student. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and a master’s degree in computer engineering, both from the University of Michigan. “I studied hard and worked to prove myself. Eventually, I started my own company where I could provide opportunities for others here in Michigan,” he recalls.

Jimmy launched Logic Solutions, a mobile and web technology innovation firm, in a basement in downtown Ann Arbor. The company now has six offices worldwide and has worked with over 2,100 clients ranging from universities, automotive OEMs, industry consortiums, Fortune 500 companies, nonprofits, healthcare corporations, and software firms.

Jimmy stays in Michigan because he likes it here. He is proud he has been able to pay back what he got from the U.S., which gave him an opportunity for both an education and employment. “I can now do the same for others,” he says. “I feel I can provide job opportunities and provide internships to many international students and opportunities for when they graduate from the university. We are in the digital technology space, which has a global impact. I’m happy that I have been able to grow my company and hence provide opportunities for international students while they are in school and after graduation.”
