Dichotomy Student Journal

Dichotomy Student Journal Dichotomy is a student-run academic journal from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture and Community Development

Dichotomy, a student published journal, strives to be a critical link between UDM students and the discourses on design, architecture, urbanism, and community development. Like the institution, Dichotomy focuses on social justice and critical thought concerning intellectual, spiritual, ethical, and social development both in and outside of Detroit. The aim of Dichotomy is to disseminate these rele

vant investigations conducted by students, faculty, and professionals. The theme of this issue is UGLY. This theme is intended to engage a dialogue on this social and cultural aesthetic. Therefore, works that may contribute to this issue should demonstrate or comment on how ugly and beautiful are understood through design, architecture, urbanism, or community development. The term UGLY is often associated with any project that veers from the realm of easy and accepted solutions. In reality it is the skin of an investigation that challenges our perceptions and form and architecture. Dichotomy 19 seeks to understand this complexity through the conversation of its own social and cultural aesthetic. Submissions should reflect upon how the line between beautiful and UGLY is blurred by original understandings of design, architecture, urbanism, or community development. Abstract Deadline: December 1st, 2012.

Only one week left to submit your ECHO abstracts! Don’t miss your chance—submissions close on March 15th!

Echo begins from within. The hidden whispers reverberate and shape the inner voice. Echo ventures outward, discovering the hidden and unknown. Echo shares new perspectives, reflections, and messages in a continual reshaping of the past that is carried into the future. Echo’s return is an abstraction standing in place of the original call, a memory transformed, interpreted, and reimagined. Dichotomy 29 explores the intersection and overlapping of multiple perspectives, and reflects on how our actions echo the voices of others. It invites designers, creative thinkers and activists to question past visions of the present, and to project and critique imagined futures. The call of Echo is for anyone willing to listen and open to receive.

The deadline to submit Abstracts to Dichotomy 29: ECHO is March 1st.

As we are getting ready to complete the production of Dichotomy 28: RED, and while we are advertising our open Call for Abstracts for the issue Dichotomy 29: ECHO, we take a moment to celebrate the past issue Dichotomy 27: GATHER, which included excellent contributions by designers, artists, and activists from across the world.

This post is featuring the contribution to Dichotomy 27: GATHER by Steffen Fisher - MÉTRO: Le ministère de l'intérieur Réunionnais. Exploring 'Slippages' in Language and Architecture through the Translation in Four Different Almanacs of an Iconic French Building into its Créole 'Other'.
