Dickinson State University Blue Runs Deep

There are more than 50 student clubs and organizations.

Deep roots…wide vision: Dickinson State University (DSU), strategically located near stunning natural areas and in the midst of the booming energy industry, is a training ground for leaders and professionals in more than 75 fields of study in 10 academic areas. DSU’s innovative Theodore Roosevelt Honors Leadership Program prepares students for service-learning opportunities through challenging coursework, interactive team-building and research-based projects. A premiere location, low tuition cost, small class sizes, unique leadership opportunities, and a strong community feel are key qualities of DSU. Established in 1918, this four-year public university has a student body of approximately 1,500 and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), a commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCAHLC); Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council (EHAC), National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)/Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP); the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE), and the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). DSU also offers 21 degrees and one certificate, with six of the degree programs online in Bismarck. Five faculty members with support from the DSU main campus in Dickinson and adjunct faculty provide classes to nontraditional students in the daytime, evening and online in small classroom settings. With the university’s close proximity to the energy industry, nearly 100 percent of graduates find employment upon graduation.

Bringing college, careers, and entrepreneurship into the classroom!

Professor Stephanie Osborne visited Williston Basin School District #7 as a guest lecturer, connecting with approximately 80 students across four classes! She shared insights on college and career preparation with three Financial Literacy classes and led hands-on entrepreneurship activities with a Business Fundamentals class.

Stephanie also reconnected with DSU alumni Carissa Calvillo, who teaches the classes. What a great opportunity to inspire students, build connections, and bring real-world learning to the classroom!

Yesterday, our Introduction to Exercise Science class welcomed Willie Jones, Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Miami Dolphins!

Originally from South Dakota, Willie shared his educational and professional journey, including his experiences coaching at the Universities of Nebraska, Illinois, and Minnesota, and how he made his way to the NFL. He discussed the importance of building relationships with athletes, constantly observing and learning, and reading to continue growing as a coach.

Students also had the opportunity to ask questions about his daily schedule, how strength training has evolved since his own days as an athlete, and the pros and cons of working as a strength and conditioning coach. Thank you, Willie, for sharing your experiences and giving our students a firsthand look into the profession!

It’s okay to not be okay. You don’t have to have it all figured out, and you don’t have to go through it alone. Your mental health matters, and asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Check in on a friend. Make time for yourself. Don’t be afraid to reach out for support. Remember that counseling is a safe place to talk, heal, and grow.

Whether you’re having a tough day or just need someone to talk to, you matter, your feelings are valid, and support is always worth seeking.

Let’s continue to break the stigma around mental health and remind one another that it’s okay to ask for help. Contact Laurie at [email protected]
