On Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2023, Surry Community College’s Alpha Xi Tau Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society partnered with Mount Airy Parks and Recreation to clean a two-mile stretch of the Ararat River. Starting at Riverside Park, chapter members Camille Jimenez and Veronika Dimeo, as well as co-advisor, Dr. Kathleen Fowler, followed the Greenway south, collecting 68 pounds of litter.

PTK went to the Greensboro Science Center recently to check out the butterfly exhibit! We had a great time! The garden was filled with monarchs, swallowtails, and many other varieties of butterflies.

Our next summer fun will be a river cleanup on 26 July at Riverside Park in Mount Airy.

The Alpha Xi Tau Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at Surry Community College donated 161 hygiene and baby items as well as birthday kits to the Little Free Pantry (LFP) of Surry Community College in Dobson this March.

The Little Free Pantry has provided food and supplies to anyone on campus or in the community needing assistance. It is a cabinet placed outside on the college’s Dobson campus, in an accessible but discreet location near the Deborah Freidman Library (R-Building) and tennis courts.

Surry Community College’s PTK Chapter Advisor Dr. Kathleen D. Fowler says, “The Little Free Pantry provides a much-needed service for our students and the surrounding community. No one should face going to bed hungry because of food insecurity, nor should they be denied access to basic needs. We are grateful to everyone who donated to this drive. You have really made a difference in people’s lives.”

We will hold the drawing at the regular chapter meeting on that day (around 3:30 pm).
