William Purkett, a graduate of Elizabeth City University, taught at Dover High School and was a member of the Board of Directors of the YMCA. He observed that the black student population at Dover High School was about 10% and there was a lack of cultural and social activities for the students. Purkett serving as the initial Ebony Club A
dvisor (followed by Ms. The club provided positive activities for the students, participation in school sponsored events activities, and helped members of the club to develop leadership and organization skills. The Ebony Coed Y operated under the umbrella of the YMCA, which allowed the club to travel to a variety of places and events. The group was involved in fundraisers, the Annual Ebony Ball and trips to Philadelphia, New York and Atlanta, where the Ebony Club visited cultural and historical venues. This was a time for many African American students of Dover High that was never forgotten, and if they remember anything about their social life in high school, itβs the events and activities of the Ebony Club. Dee Castille, a graduate of Dover High, took the leadership role and formed committees to organize the Ebony Club Reunion. The event is to highlight the Ebony Club years of 1970 β 1979.
