Congratulations to SMC Cross Country and Track & Field Head Coach Zac Sartori for his five-year anniversary with the college. He was recognized at the Board of Trustees meeting this week for this milestone.

He is a former college runner at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville and Loyola University-Chicago. Sartori earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and his master’s degree in sport and exercise psychology from Northern Illinois University.

Sartori served as the men’s and women’s volunteer assistant track and field and cross country coach at the University of Illinois at Chicago from 2013-16. He worked as the assistant boys’ track and field and cross country coach at Lockport Township, Ill., High School from 2016-21 and also served as assistant men’s and women’s cross country and track and field coach at the College of DuPage.

At SMC, Sartori rebuilt cross country from scratch, with multiple top-20 finishes nationally on both the men’s and women’s sides, finishing second in Region XII on both sides in 2023.

Last season, the Roadrunner women won the MCCAA Western Conference. Owen Saylor finished 24th in the country, becoming SMC’s 34th cross country All-American and 69th overall.

In addition to helping with the scoring table for volleyball and basketball, measuring and approving courses for Steve’s Run and the fall Turkey Trot, this year he also ran point on reviving the men’s and women’s track and field teams, with two men, Luke Long and Maguire Johnson, qualifying for nationals in Hobbs, N.M., last month. The foundation is being built to grow that program into a regional contender.

Zac lives in Dowagiac with his wife, Kate, a physical therapist in Mishawaka and an SMC adjunct instructor.

“I’ve witnessed you mentoring students in our upward climb to success,” Chairman Tom Jerdon said. “It’s really memorable because you were our very first fulltime coach” since SMC returned to intercollegiate athletics.

We're excited to WELCOME Adeline Weber of Berrien Springs to the SMC Track Team! CONGRATULATIONS!

SMC Assistant Coach AJ Bradley said, “Berrien Springs has produced some outstanding athletes over the years, and Adeline is another example of that tradition. Having coached members of her family and started my own coaching journey there, this signing carries special meaning. Adeline has shown remarkable growth in the hurdles and continues to raise her level each season. We’re excited to help her build on that momentum and become the next great Roadrunner hurdler. Welcome to the family, Adeline.”

Weber joins Taylor Bolle of Constantine in the 2026 SMC Women’s Track and Field recruiting class. Numerous other student-athletes will compete in both women’s cross country and women’s track for the Roadrunners.

A marvelous Monday! Next in the starting box is Yarely Lopez-Chacon of Three Rivers Athletics, who joins the Roadrunners for cross country and track. CONGRATS and WELCOME!

Head Coach Zac Sartori said, “Yarely has proven to be a strong athlete and a talented young runner. I’m excited to have her joining the Roadrunner family as we grow our program and prepare for another strong season.“

Coach Jason Mickel of Three Rivers added, “Yarely is an incredibly sweet young woman who cares about her teammates. She has shown significant growth in distance sports since joining late in her high school career and has huge potential moving to the next level.”

Lopez-Chacon joins Ella Bryan of Jones, Taylor Sill of Berrien Springs, Tana Drobek of Mattawan and Jocelyn Kiner of Dowagiac in the 2026 SMC Women’s Cross Country recruiting class.

In September 2025, the Roadrunners shocked the field and won the MCCAA Western Conference championship on their home course in Dowagiac. The team then finished the season ranked 18th in the country after competing in the NJCAA National Championships in unseasonably cold and snowy conditions at the Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Finishing another week strong by announcing that Taylor Bolle of Constantine has signed to run for SMC! CONGRATS and WELCOME to her!

Head Coach Zac Sartori said, “I’m really excited to be adding Taylor to our sprint crew this coming year. She shows a lot of potential and will surely help our program grow.”

Bolle is the first track-only member of the 2026 SMC Women’s Track and Field recruiting class. Numerous other student-athletes will compete in both women’s cross country and women’s track for the Roadrunners.

Let's run! WELCOME to Alex Avila of Constantine, our newest running Roadrunner!

SMC Head Coach Zac Sartori said, “I’m really excited to have Alex join the team. I met him a couple of years ago at a meet out at Constantine High School and he impressed me as a sophomore. He is dedicated, hard working, and talented. I anticipate he will continue to improve here at SMC and contribute to a strong program in the coming years.”

Avila joins Emmet Van Cleave of Grass Lake, Teddy Ippel of Bridgman, David Lane of White Pigeon, Dontrel Taylor of Three Rivers and Trent Hansen of Plainwell in the 2026 SMC Men’s Cross Country recruiting class.
