On May 19, Heritage Southwest Intermediate School District’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) Department, in conjunction with Michigan Works! and Southwestern Michigan College, held the second annual MiCareerQuest Cass County.
This event exposed 800 Cass and Van Buren Counties ninth graders from 13 schools to the world of work. This event is “not just a career fair,” but “an interactive career exploration event.”

Last day for registration for the 2026 STEM Camp is Friday, May 29!

Southwestern Michigan College’s FREE STEM Camp provides an exciting opportunity for students entering grades 4-6 to engage in workshops and activities that will explore Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Camp includes small class sizes, hands-on learning, lunch, and a T-shirt. This is a ONE day camp. Pick the day—June 16 or 17—that works best for you. Each day is limited to 60 students.

From the Southwester Magazine, Alex Severinghaus wears a lot of hats as Regional Store Manager for Zolman’s Best One Tire and Auto Care’s three Michigan retail locations in Niles, Kalamazoo and Portage. “I like helping people,” he said, “watching people grow, finding out their wants and needs, whether it’s personally or professionally, and being able to help them achieve those goals. People helped me reach my ambitions, and I wanted to be that person for someone else — paying it forward.”
