DelVal Equine

DelVal Equine Find more about the equine programs at Delaware Valley University at delval.edu/equine. The horses and foals are handled daily by students and staff.

The Equine Program faculty members bring decades of experience and success to DelVal, with expertise that ranges from instruction and training to driving, riding, breeding, and nutrition. All faculty are dedicated to teaching and working one-on-one with students and are active participants in their own horse-related interests off campus, maintaining important contacts within the profession. They a

lso work with the college’s Center for Student Professional Development to provide contacts for employment opportunities. DelVal maintains extensive on-campus equine facilities within short walking distance of the dorms. The Equestrian Center serves as the main training facility where students take riding skills classes, practical management courses, and equine training classes. Competitive intercollegiate teams also practice at the Equestrian Center during the week and on weekends. A breeding barn is home to Standardbred ex-racehorses, where the college stands stallions and maintains a broodmare herd. Students have the opportunity to play an integral role in the daily management of the facility, as well as a chance to actively assist with foaling and breeding procedures.

✨ Meet Poppy! ✨

Poppy has been a special part of the DelVal Equine program, and perennial student favorite, for more than a decade. She is a true all-arounder, giving lessons in dressage, jumping, western, vaulting, and even low-level eventing!

DelVal alum and adjunct faculty member Jillian Eaton purchased Poppy from the New Holland auction when she was 8 years old; she had been driven and used as a broodmare, but until then had never been ridden!

Some fun facts about Poppy:
🌟 She is a Belgian-Haflinger cross
💕 Her patient and kind personality makes her a great teacher for both new and experienced riders
🍎 She loves her treats! After eating one, she sucks on her tongue to get every last bit of flavor

From never being ridden to teaching students across multiple disciplines, Poppy has made a lasting impact on our program and in our hearts. 💚💛

We are incredibly grateful to Jillian for giving so many students the opportunity to know, love, ride, and learn from our beloved Pop Star! 🐴⭐️

✨Meet Apollo✨

A familiar face to many students and alumni, Apollo is an Andalusian/Quarter Horse mare who has made an incredible impact both on our equine program and those who have had the opportunity to know, ride, love, and learn from her.

This year marks 20 years with Apollo in the DelVal Equine program! 💚🐴💛

Fun facts about Apollo:
🌴 Born and bred in Florida
🥇 Competed in IHSA shows since she was 3 years old
🍎 Favorite snack: Applesauce in a cup!

We are especially grateful to Apollo’s owner for leasing her to our program, allowing countless students to learn from and care for this one-of-a-kind mare.

Thank you, Apollo, for 20 amazing years as part of our Equestrian Center and DelVal family. 💚💛

*Off campus job opportunity on Sundays*

ISO: Paid position!! Forliano Farm in Furlong, PA

SUNDAY HELP!!

AM:

Arrive at 6:30 - Dump Grain - some need to soak.

Put hay in stalls - 75% of stalls have easy to fill hay bags. Others just go in the ground under the feed tubs.

Bring horses in - we are on 60 acres so this is the most time consuming part (takes about 90 minutes to 2 hours). You walk about 5 miles.

PM - same except hay goes outside.

So it’s about 3 hours each morning and each afternoon. There are some instances where they can stay out in good weather - Or stay in in crappy weather! I will make the call on that.

All of this takes me about 2 to 2.5 hours but I move fast and know the job inside and out. I don’t expect anyone to do it faster than 3. But I do expect you to be thorough, conscientious and respectful to the horses.
