DelVal Equine Find more about the equine programs at Delaware Valley University at delval.edu/equine. The horses and foals are handled daily by students and staff.

The Equine Program faculty members bring decades of experience and success to DelVal, with expertise that ranges from instruction and training to driving, riding, breeding, and nutrition. All faculty are dedicated to teaching and working one-on-one with students and are active participants in their own horse-related interests off campus, maintaining important contacts within the profession. They a

lso work with the college’s Center for Student Professional Development to provide contacts for employment opportunities. DelVal maintains extensive on-campus equine facilities within short walking distance of the dorms. The Equestrian Center serves as the main training facility where students take riding skills classes, practical management courses, and equine training classes. Competitive intercollegiate teams also practice at the Equestrian Center during the week and on weekends. A breeding barn is home to Standardbred ex-racehorses, where the college stands stallions and maintains a broodmare herd. Students have the opportunity to play an integral role in the daily management of the facility, as well as a chance to actively assist with foaling and breeding procedures.

Our second stop on Day 3 of the DelVal Equine Study Abroad was Kildangan Stud, the Irish base for Darley Stud, one of the largest and most successful breeders of Thoroughbred racehorses in the world.

Our tour of Kildangan was led by Owen Smyth, well known as the Head Stallion Man at Kildangan and an international expert in stallion management and Thoroughbred breeding. His humor and insights made our visit a rare and exceptional treat.

During the tour, the students learned about the history of the Darley Stud and Godolphin Racing, the care and handling of the breeding stallions, and the unique aspects of the broodmare barn and foaling facilities.

We are very grateful to the team at Kildangan Stud for this rare chance to explore Thoroughbred breeding at the highest level and meet several top stallions, including Blue Point and Night of Thunder!

Day 3 of the DelVal Equine Study Abroad began at Paddy Twomey Racing in County Tipperary, Ireland. The students had the opportunity to observe the morning routine at the busy yard and watch both a workout on the wood chip gallop and a physiotherapy session.

As we toured the top-class facilities, we learned how all aspects of the operation, from barn layout to training schedules, feeding management, and raceday planning are all designed to optimize the physical and mental well-being of the nearly 100 horses in the yard. It's no wonder Paddy is so highly successful, with horses racing in Ireland, England, France, and the United States!

It was a fantastic visit, and we are so grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from the team at Paddy Twomey Racing!

The Irish National Stud & Gardens in Kildare was our afternoon stop on Day 2 of the DelVal Equine Study Abroad.

The students first enjoyed a private tour of the Stud, where they learned about Thoroughbred breeding in Ireland and the unique role of the Irish National Stud as a government-owned facility and tourist attraction.

Then, we were treated to the award-winning Irish Racehorse Experience and discovered more about career opportunities in the racing industry and the Irish National Stud Breeding Management Course from Education Development Manager Anne Channon.

Day 2 of the DelVal Equine Study Abroad began with a fantastic visit to Gloria Nolan Connemara Performance Ponies in Carlow, Ireland.

The students learned about the history, characteristics, judging standards, and versatility of this Irish native breed, and of course they thoroughly enjoyed meeting all of the fabulous ponies!

Thank you to Gloria Nolan for hosting us, and for sharing your wealth of knowledge and passion for the Connemara. We loved every minute!

Delval Equine hit the ground running on our first day in Ireland - as soon as we landed in Dublin we were off to the stunning Karlswood Stables, home of Irish Olympic medallist, Cian O'Connor.

Huge thanks to Fiona Fitzgibbon and the rest of the Karlswood team for a fantastic tour of this incredible high-performance center. What a spectacular way to begin our exploration of the Irish horse industry!
