In case you're wondering what goes on in a Comp Lit class...

This semester, Dr. Irving Goh offered his undergrad seminar titled "Genius! From Sappho to Taylor Swift." To complement readings and discussions, Dr. Goh had several invited lecturers.

First, Poet and MacArthur "Genius" Fellow Jericho Brown visited Professor Irving Goh's "Genius!" class on Feb 10, 2026. He talked about his poetry collection, The New Testament. After the class, he very generously signed copies of his book!

On April 7, 2026, Emily Daggett Smith, violinist and leader of the Vega String Quartet, which is Emory's Quartet-in-Residence, visited the seminarto talk about practicing, discipline, perfectionism, and well-being. She also performed for the class the Sarabande from Bach's Partita No.2 for solo violin.

Last Friday, the English and Comparative Literature Depts. came together to celebrate our undergraduates who completed an honors thesis. The event showcased their scholarship and gave the students a chance to talk about what goes into working on a year-long writing project.

Fiona (3rd from the left) was this year's Comparative Literature honors student. Her project, "Eating Words and Worlds: Food Writing, Othering, and the Aftertaste of Power" received highest honors in her defense.

Also in March, we welcomed back a lovely group of Comp Lit BA Alums for a panel discussion. The goal of the panel was to discuss the perennial question: "Well, what do you do with a degree in Comparative Literature!?"

Our alumni are in graduate school and law school, working in software, writing professionally, and working in higher education. Across the board though, regardless of career, all of our panelists expressed how important their skills in reading deeply and writing incisively have been in their lives since graduation.

Huge thanks to Juliana, Ben, Zach, Sofia, Yazi, and Allen for connecting with our undergrads!

We've been lucky this year to host several incredible visiting scholars and lots of community events-- over the next week, we'll be recognizing and celebrating our year of learning.

First off, in the fall semester Dr. Carlos Rojas visited from Duke, where he is a professor of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. His discussed the ways that the quality of infectiousness associated with AI might be viewed as a threat to the human subject, but may also offer a way of rethinking the foundations of humanity itself.
