Undergraduate students can choose from 13 bachelor degrees in 77 majors and 63 minors. In addition to the two-year program at the School of Medicine and a College of Pharmacy program, UMD offers graduate programs in 24 different fields, participates in three all-university PhD programs (one of which is located primarily on the UMD campus), and cooperates significantly in the delivery of six Twin Cities-based PhD programs. UMD consistently ranks among the top midwestern, regional universities in U.S. News and World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” issue. Providing an alternative to both large research universities and small liberal arts colleges, UMD attracts students looking for a personalized learning experience on a medium-sized campus of a major university. Driven by a lifelong curiosity about the natural world, University of Minnesota Duluth student Izzy Xiong is turning her passion for environmental science into local impact. Through an Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) grant, Xiong is conducting sediment research in Duluth’s Hartley Park under the guidance of UMD faculty. Her work will provide key data to help inform future decisions regarding the Hartley Pond Dam and the restoration of local aquatic habitats. For Xiong, doing research in the community she loves reinforces her goal to be part of meaningful environmental change.
