A recent campus collaboration paired CAHSS students studying gaps in community services with UMD Swenson College of Science & Engineering students learning software development.

In Spring 2026, students and faculty members from very different corners of campus came together around a complex problem: food insecurity in Duluth’s Central Hillside. The project was an example of an innovative model, Vertically Integrated Projects (VIPs), that strives for a new level of collaboration across fields and areas of expertise.

Dr. Aparna Katre, Interdisciplinary Studies Program Director, noted, "It is always a challenge to bring together students who are developing expertise in completely different fields, but that’s where the magic happens."

The State of Minnesota recently released the Minnesota Maternal Mortality Report, which found that the no. 1 cause of death in the period of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum was mental health. Solving a crisis in this complex requires cross-disciplinary connection, which led CAHSS to host a community discussion and interprofessional dialogue on postpartum mental health.

Over two evenings in the Kathryn A. Martin Library rotunda, CAHSS brought together 85 researchers, health professionals, and community members ranging from psychologists and pharmacists to social workers and doulas. By setting the stage for lived-experience and frontline expertise to meet, we created a space where folks could share frustrations, align on best practices, and build a more integrated network of care.

Surprise! Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz made a quick visit to the University of Minnesota Duluth to welcome students on the first day of the fall semester. During his visit, he dropped in on Political Science 1011: American Government and Politics during their very first class session.

Proudly announcing a new season from the UMD Department of Theatre!

The regular season features five shows and the Lab Series for original and experimental works. The season holds timeless classics as well as contemporary marvels, including Shakespeare’s Scottish play, a modern take on a 15th-century morality play, our annual dance show, an adaptation of a work by one of the first female playwrights, and a Sondheim blockbuster.

All performances are at the Marshall Performing Arts Center (MPAC) at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Tickets, including season subscriptions, will go on sale this summer.
