Dr. Wood's Field Ornithology intersession class bolted out to West Texas to study bird i.d., behavior, habitat/ecological relationships, and conservation at locations like Balmoreah SP, Davis Mountains SP, Big Bend NP and others.

The class observed 151 bird species (!) and a variety of other wildlife.

The 9 students accorded themselves well in spite of torrid desert conditions that would make Alighieri chug water.

Along the Emory Peak Trail, SE students assisted a hiker dealing with heat exhaustion/stroke symptoms; very proud of them!

The class included Manny Lederer, Jessica Autry-Baquis, Cora McKinney, Blant Duncan, Raelynn Castleberry, Kurstin Kuhlman, Drake Smith, Colton Fite, and Karson Whitley.

All photos taken by SE students. Scroll through them all!

Dr. Wood's Ornithology class went on a field trip to McCurtain County last weekend. Students studied bird identification and habitat management at Red Slough WMA, Tiak Work Center, Little River NWR, and the McCurtain County Wilderness Area. 126 bird species were seen/heard including fantastic encounters with a Swallow-tailed Kite, American Bittern, King Rail, Sora, Red-cockaded Woodpeckers, Worm-eating Warbler, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Scarlet Tanager, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Eastern Screech-Owl and many more. Photo credits include Cora McKinney, Manny Lederer, and Kurstin Kuhlman. Thanks to recent SE Fisheries and Wildlife graduate Matt Hargrove, the new biologist at Red Slough WMA, for joining us and showing us around Red Slough. Thanks also to Clay Barnes for his help with the RCW site visit.
