Dr. Tryan L. McMickens, Full Professor of Higher Education and Coordinator of the Higher Education Administration Program, received the 2026 NASPA Region III Bob E. Leach Award for Outstanding Service to Students at this year's NASPA - Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education conference. This recognition is based on these ideals:

- a commitment to personalized student experiences and evidence of successful efforts in humanizing the campus community;
- high quality interaction with individual students and student groups;
- evidence of performance 'above and beyond the call of duty’ while serving multiple roles within the campus community

Leach was the first person of color to serve as NASPA president and the first Black administrator at Florida State University. Leach’s life and career were dedicated to bringing people of different backgrounds together for the purpose of promoting equality for all.

The Senator Jeanne Lucas Week of Events is a week-long commemoration honoring the life, legacy, and public service of North Carolina Senator Jeanne Hopkins Lucas. The late Senator Jeanne Hopkins Lucas was the first Black woman elected to the North Carolina State Senate, whose leadership embodied courage, service, and an unwavering commitment to equity, education, and community empowerment. Senator Lucas, affectionately known as “Queen Jeanne,” was a proud member of NCNW, a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., and a tireless champion for children, seniors, women, and underserved communities throughout her historic tenure. This week will be hosted primarily in partnership with North Carolina Central University (NCCU) student organizations, the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) Durham Section, and other community organizations. We will convene students, scholars, faith and civic leaders, and elected officials for panels, student presentations, and public dialogue grounded in her enduring impact.

This week-long event will feature three days on North Carolina Central University's campus (March 23 - March 25, 2026), with three scholarship contests held then as well. All contest applications close on March 15th.
First, the Black Health Research Poster Contest will take place on March 23rd from 4:00 - 4:50 PM at the NCCU School of Education.

Second, the New Media Contest will take submissions from now until March 15th. The top 3 submissions will be reviewed and judged on March 23rd at 6:00 PM in the NCCU School of Education Auditorium, following the Black Women's Health Panel from 5:00 to 6:00.

Third, the Oratorical Contest will take place on March 25th in the NCCU School of Education Auditorium from 3:00 - 4:00 PM.

Each contest winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship for the Fall 2026 semester. All contest details are available in the applications, which you can access through the QR code on the Contests Flyer.

| Taheera Blount, Ph.D., assistant professor of counselor education, has received an $83K National Institutes of Health grant through the Research Centers in Minority Institutions to improve K–12 mental health counseling.

Congratulations to Dr. Taheera Blount, Assistant Professor of Counseling at NCCU, who was named "Counselor Educator of the Year" by the North Carolina School Counselor Association at their annual conference last week in Greensboro.

During the conference, Dr. Jeffrey Warren, Associate Dean of the NCCU School of Education, presented "Collaboration with Generative Artificial Intelligence to Strengthen Intervention Implementation".
