What happens when students come together with purpose?

During Easter weekend 1960, it meant turning sit-ins into a coordinated movement. It meant building something independent, rooted in shared vision and collective power. From that moment, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee was born, led by students who understood that real change takes strategy, connection, and courage!

They didn’t just respond to history, they helped shape it!

You know Julian Bond as a civil rights icon… but what if we told you he was also a poet? 👀

“I Too, Hear America Singing” was published in 1960 in The Student Voice, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee’s very first newsletter—capturing the spirit of a movement just beginning to rise.

And he didn’t stop there. Julian Bond and other SNCC workers kept writing poetry throughout the movement—using words as another tool for resistance, reflection, and vision.

Can’t complain about high gas prices if you didn’t vote—according to SNCC veteran Margaret Block in her poem “If You Don’t Vote, Don’t Cry.”

Straight to the point and rooted in the kind of political education was known for. Margaret Block didn’t just organize in her community, she used poetry to hold people accountable, push for participation, and remind folks that power doesn’t show up if you don’t!

This , we’re lifting up the voices that told the truth, plain and powerful.

So, the question still stands: are you using your voice, or sitting on the sidelines crying??

SAVE THE DATE!!

The 10th National Flagway™ Tournament and Math Playground is a dual-format, youth-led celebration of math literacy bringing together students, families, educators, and community partners on the MIT campus during the 2026 Year of Math.

The day begins with the Math Playground—an open, family-friendly arena featuring 25+ interactive math games designed for K–8 learners and led by high school Math Literacy Workers (MLWs). Participants can explore hands-on activities that make math creative, collaborative, and accessible for all ages.

The event culminates in the National Flagway™ Tournament, a fast-paced, team-based competition built on the Möbius function, where middle school teams are coached by high school MLWs using YPP’s distinctive near-peer leadership model. Students don’t just solve math problems—they strategize, move, collaborate, and lead.

What makes this event different is that young people are at the center. High school leaders design, facilitate, and coach the experience, building confidence and serving their communities while younger students gain access to welcoming, high-energy math learning.

Families, educators, and supporters are invited to attend, observe, participate, and celebrate a public vision of math where leadership, inclusion, and opportunity take center stage.

This is a free event, but please RSVP: https://buff.ly/e05WhPb
