Alt-Activism Initiative at Duke University

Alt-Activism Initiative at Duke University Alt-Activism is a Duke graduate student initiative to foster dialogue within the Duke and Durham community about local social justice issues.

Alt-Activism seeks to expand the notion of academic career "alternatives" beyond the binary of professoriate/private sector. Rather than imagining alt-ac as a form of advanced vocational training, what if we turn our scholarly research and interests towards renewed civic, community and social justice engagement? Alt-Activism will bring a series of local and regional activists to campus in order to

foster dialogue within the Duke and Durham community about social justice issues (especially those pertaining to education, policing, and prisons); promote a commitment to social justice; offer students a venue for learning effective organizing tools and methods; and strengthen relations between Durham and Duke. We will bring four area activists to campus in the 2015/16 year for a series of interactive workshops designed to educate Duke community members about local social justice issues and to give them the tools, skills, and contacts to contribute to these projects in their academic and professional lives. 2) Fast food workers are rallying on April 14 for $15 an hour and union rights: http://bit.ly/1RnOQkg
3) We are canvassing East Durham on April 16 to build power and opposition to the new proposed $81 million police headquarters and demand a People's Budget: http://bit.ly/22HXIsj

Hi all, Thanks for coming to our October 21st event and asking such thoughtful questions! We uploaded some pictures and the resource guide from Melissa Norton's talk on Gentrification and the New Geography of Race, Class, and Privilege in the City. Our next event will be Friday, Nov. 20th at 6:30 in the Duke Coffeehouse. Local activists Saralee Stafford and Neal Shirley will be discussing their recent book, "Dixie Be Damned! 300 Years of Insurrection in the American South." Hope to see you all there and please share with all your friends and family in the Durham/Triangle community.
