Sisters In Step would like to acknowledge our organization's history of cultural appropriation at the University of New Hampshire. Sisters In Step was founded in 1997 by a group of six Women of Color as a creative outlet for Women of Color on a predominantly white campus. The original mission of the group was to create art while also creating awareness about the lack of diversity on UNHโs campus. Since our founding 23 years ago, we have strayed from that mission. We acknowledge and apologize for our lack of action in the past. Our current leadership is dedicated to creating an inclusive environment and understanding the origin of step, as well as taking serious action in order to ensure this occurs. We have been in contact with founding members, alumni, the Beauregard Center (formerly OMSA), and the Associate Director of the McNair Scholars Program to discuss the future of Sisters in Step at UNH.
As an organization, we stand with the Black Lives Matter movement, Black students at the University of New Hampshire, and Black students across the country. Our leadership and members will be active participants in the fight to end police brutality and fight racial injustice in the United States and beyond.
We want to be an ally to BIPOC at the University of New Hampshire. Students who are looking to contact our leadership should message us through Instagram or Facebook. UNH Students of Color, please note that if you want to participate, give us advice or suggestions, know you are welcome and wanted.
