The kiwiberry might be small, but it has mighty potential as a specialty crop. This once-wild little fruit was researched and cultivated right here at the University of New Hampshire by Dr. Iago Hale, earning him recognition as the 2024 Innovator of the Year!

UNHInnovation's FOSTER Program is a U.S. Small Business Administration-funded initiative to support NH small businesses pursuing federal innovation and R&D grants. We're delighted to share that one of the companies in our program, 2KR Systems, was recently awarded a $1 million hashtag Phase II grant!

2KR Systems, LLC received the funding for their patent-pending innovation, SnowSentry™. This substantial grant will drive the development of a state-of-the-art Internet of Things (IoT) monitoring network, designed to provide early warnings and measure structural loads, significantly enhancing safety and infrastructure management across various industries.

Fostering the success of NH small businesses is one of the many reasons UNHInnovation at the University of New Hampshire is proud to be at the heart of the state's innovation ecosystem.

This week, honored Dr. Iago Hale of the UNH College of Life Sciences and Agriculture as the 2024 J. Brent Loy Innovator of the Year at the UNH Research Celebration.

Dr. Hale, a professor of specialty crop improvement in the department of agriculture, nutrition, and food systems, was recognized for his transformative work in the commercialization of kiwiberries, significantly enhancing the Northeast's agricultural landscape.

Leading the kiwiberry research and breeding at the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station, Dr. Hale has worked to develop appealing, commercial-ready varieties, meeting the rising consumer demand for quality, local produce and fostering new agricultural ventures. This initiative is pivotal in revitalizing regional agriculture with innovative, high-value crops.

The award highlights Dr. Hale's collaborative efforts with academic and industry partners to advance agricultural innovation, resulting in new kiwiberry lines and a commercial license that promises to boost production and distribution. Dr. Hale's ongoing research exemplifies UNH’s commitment to impactful innovation that benefits society.

"I see an award like this as a well-deserved acknowledgement of that long, collective effort to steward this research to the public good," said Hale, in recognition of the lineage of the kiwiberry from its wild roots dating back a thousand years.

Season's greetings from ! As we look back on 2023, we're proud of the work we've accomplished supporting faculty, staff, and student innovators at the University of New Hampshire and businesses throughout the state and beyond.

Our team is winding down for the holiday break and taking some well earned time with family and friends. Our office will close on Friday, December 22, returning Tuesday, January 2.
