Organic foods have been praised as being healthier than conventional foods for multiple reasons, including higher nutrient content. This fact, however, remains inconclusive. Current research states that organic foods are only higher in certain nutrients, such as magnesium, iron, and vitamin C, but concluding evidence is lacking due to study biases and other factors not included in the research [1].
Some of the factors that research doesn’t always consider, when evaluating organic foods versus conventional, are the variety of plant, quality of soil, time of harvest, and storage [2]. Due to the variable nature of these, it’s difficult to draw conclusions from single, or even a few experiments.
While organic foods limit the amount of pesticide consumption, which can mitigate health risks (especially in individuals who are in vulnerable states like pregnancy), there are other factors, like bacteria contamination, that should be considered. Since organic foods have strict rules surrounding treatment, they aren’t allowed to use the same techniques to kill bacteria as conventional foods, like irradiation [2]. Therefore, both organic and conventional foods can be contaminated with bacteria. According to the Mayo Clinic [2], the most common produce bacterium contaminants are E. coli O157.H7 and Salmonella typhimurium.
Despite the minor health benefits of consuming organic foods, eating an all-organic diet may not be a viable option for most families due to the high cost or difficult to obtain. If this is the case, don’t let this deter you from eating conventional foods and/or produce which are beneficial and healthful regardless of the comparisons to organic.

You may be under the belief that eating lots of carbohydrates will cause weight gain, especially if you consume a lot of unverified, nutrition-centered social media content. Rather than being a fact, this claim is a generalization that stems from the idea that refined, highly processed carbohydrates increase rates of obesity. As of right now, there is not enough research to make a confident conclusion on whether this fact is true. What we do have evidence for, however, is that there is no “one-size fits all” dietary pattern, or consumption of carbohydrates, that will help everyone reach their optimal body weight [1]. Despite this, we know, from many validated research studies, that high quality, complex carbohydrates may have protective properties for our health. Complex carbohydrate consumption may help contribute to gut microbiome diversity, decrease cardiovascular disease risk, and decrease inflammation in the body [2]. All these factors can lead to a healthier lifestyle. In conclusion, while many factors contribute to weight gain, there’s not enough research to conclude whether carbohydrate consumption—especially refined, highly processed carbs— directly impacts weight gain on its own. If you’re worried about the possibility of highly refined carbohydrates affecting your health, it might be more optimal to stick with consuming complex carbohydrates, like whole grains, starchy vegetables, legumes, and fruits, as we have evidence for the health benefits those provide!
