We are devastated to share that our former Graduate Program Director, Dr. Vilma Yuzbasiyan-Gurkan, passed away last week. Vilma was one of the main forces behind the creation of the CMIB program and served as director from its inception until 2019.
Vilma was a force of nature within MSU CVM—a fierce and devoted mentor, and a wise, compassionate colleague. She offered every visitor coffee. She embraced her students and trainees as family—celebrating their milestones, standing by them in difficult moments, and ensuring everyone was well-fed. She expected the best from those around her because she believed deeply in their potential. She made us better—sharper thinkers, kinder leaders, and more confident versions of ourselves. She had a way of making each person feel seen and valued—and of making MSU CVM a warmer, more connected community.
Our thoughts are with the entire CMIB community, as well as everyone who knew and loved Vilma, particularly her beloved husband, Suat, and their son, Jonathan, whom she cherished beyond words.
