At the heart of global health is people: Finding ways to make people's lives better, creating new health solutions, and making a positive impact on those we work for.

That is the "why" for Michigan State University Global Health professor Dr. Rene Hinojosa. An engineer by academic background, Dr. Hinojosa found his calling when he saw how solving global health issues can create a positive difference in people's lives.

As part of his goal to connect with international communities and learn about traditional medicine, MSU kinesiology major Jagger Wraalstad enrolled in Global Health Studies' pre-clinical observation program in Cusco, Peru.

By learning alongside medical specialists across multiple fields and interacting with Peruvian citizens, Jagger strengthened his desire not only to pursue a career in medicine but also to view health care through a global lens.

Global Health isn't just about the physical health of people worldwide. It's about how humans, animals, and the environment shape the world we live in.

Understanding this comprehensive outlook was the goal of MacKenzie Lievois, who graduated from the Master of Science in Global Health program in 2025.

Fueled by her knowledge in biomedical sciences, combined with her passion for advancing women's health, MacKenzie is using the skills from the MS program to create a vision of justice, sustainability and compassion in medicine.

This month, Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine students traveled to Peru for their clinical immersion education abroad program.

This two-week program, led by GHI Associate Medical Director Dr. Jodi Flanders, took medical students to Iquitos and Lima for service-learning opportunities and direct medical observation with local medical institutions.

In Iquitos, students cared for more than 600 patients at local clinics in coordination with both local physicians and MSU faculty. Students also provided patient care to residents in villages along the Amazon River. In Lima, students visited Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño hospital to observe different units and learn about Peruvian healthcare delivery models.

The Peru clinical immersion program is one of our most popular and longest-lasting education abroad programs, and we are always grateful to be a part of MSUCOM students' medical journeys.

Due to unexpected scheduling conflicts, our Cyclospora webinar scheduled for Wednesday, August 26, has been canceled.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Cyclospora, the foodborne parasite that can cause the illness cyclosporiasis, has been in the news recently due to outbreaks in states across the US, especially in Michigan. With these outbreaks, questions can arise about where it can thrive, how it's detected and what the best treatment methods might be.

Join the Global Health Institute for a free webinar hosted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Dr. Sonia Almeria, as she discusses the epidemiology, clinical symptoms, diagnosis, detection and characterization, treatment, control and prevention methods for Cyclospora. Furthermore, Dr. Almeria will discuss future research needs to fill the knowledge gaps regarding this important parasite.
