On April 17th, third-year Interior Design students in IDES 451: Interior Design Professional Practice visited Steelcase for an immersive and inspiring learning experience.

Students toured the facility and testing lab, tried out numerous furniture pieces, and explored a wide variety of finishes—engaging with design hands-on and in real time. Just as impactful was the opportunity to network with many professionals across the company, learning about their diverse career paths and gaining invaluable advice as students prepare for their own professional journeys.

The day clearly demonstrated how Steelcase uses research to drive thoughtful, evidence-based design solutions, while also offering students meaningful insight into the many roles and opportunities within the design industry.

Thank you to the Steelcase team for welcoming our students, sharing your expertise, and investing in the next generation of designers!

Last month, ID students enrolled in the course "Virtual Reality Application in Interior Design" created exciting and innovative projects that incorporated immersive storytelling through 360° media production!

In collaboration with MSU's Digital Scholarship Lab, who provided equipment and technical guidance, course instructor Dr. Jisun Lee gave students the prompt, "A Place That Represents Me."

Students then produced short 360° videos that captured locations within the MSU Main Library with which they felt a strong personal connection. More than verbal narration, students used digital presence, perspective, and atmosphere to allow the environment itself to convey meaning.

This project allowed students to explore how 360° representation functions as an experiential form of design communication, and is a great example SPDC's commitment to embrace the leading-edge of technological advancement and innovation!

SPDC launched a new initiative with ACE Mentor Capital Region by having students from the CM, LA, and ID programs serve as Junior Mentors for ACE Lansing's 2026 program.

ACE (Architecture, Construction, Engineering) is a national program that works with high school students interested in pursuing Built Environment Industry careers.

This year, SPDC students and local industry practitioners are working side-by-side with Lansing area high school students on the programming, design, and construction management plan for a residential project.

Last month, ACE Capital Region was invited to a behind the scenes tour of Little Ceasars Arena in Detroit with the ACE Detroit affiliate, courtesy of Olympia Development and CREW Detroit.

Last month, Interior Design students in IDES 451 - Professional Practice took part in Mock Interviews and Portfolio Critiques with industry professionals.

Each student met one-on-one with a practicing interior designer to review their resumes and portfolios, gain constructive feedback, and sharpen their interview skills—an invaluable opportunity to practice talking confidently about their work and professional goals.

A huge thank you to Taylor Howes (MSU), Jennifer Plagens (SmithGroup), Michelle Allard (Fleetwood Furniture), Katie Winters (C2AE), and Lizzi Layer (DBI) for generously sharing your time and expertise.

Your support helps prepare our students for success in the design industry!
