It features two weekly seminars, as well as an internship to compliment the experience. The Michigan State University Political Science Department offers the Michigan Government Semester Program every Spring Semester. The Program focuses on Michigan government and politics. The Program is unique in that it bridges the gap between the theoretical or textbook study of state politics and the real-lif
e practical aspects of state politics. It consists of two classroom sessions taught on the capitol grounds. One session focuses on Michigan Government and Politics and features weekly guest speakers from Michigan government and politics. Our guest speakers include some of the most important leaders in Michigan government. The other session focuses on professional development skills for government careers. Students get practical experience in writing policy memos, briefs, press releases, speeches, and testimony for government. Guest speakers share their expertise on such practical topics as dealing with the press, the use of social media in government, and ethics issues. The students are also required to have an internship in Michigan government (primarily in the legislature) or with a government-related organization (such as a lobby or PR firm) during the semester. The idea is to offer a practical program for students who have an interest in state government careers. The Program is worth 14 total credits; four credits each for the two classes and six credits for the internship. The Program is limited to about 20 students. Requirements for the program include junior or senior status, a Political Science major, and a 2.5 or above grade point average. We emphasize a seminar-type atmosphere, encouraging interaction and discussion between students and with the speakers. To enhance the Michigan government experience, classes are held in the capitol building and/or a nearby office building. The classes are taught as hybrid courses, so exams, assignments, readings, and discussion forums are held online.
