Wednesday evenings from 8:30-9:30 at the Peanut Barrel in East Lansing - beginning September 1st. Pub theology is an opportunity to ask difficult questions and have open and honest conversations about things that matter, including and especially religion and spirituality. All perspectives are welcomed and encouraged; everyone has the opportunity to share his or her wrestlings and thoughts, as well

as learn from the others present. The goal is that this be an honest and authentic space for those having some experience with and/or connected to the academic world (especially since a high level of analysis and questioning is appreciated in grad school but often frowned upon with matters of spirituality!).

Students of my generation at Yale Divinity School, who received ethics instruction from H. Richard Niebuhr, James Gustafson, and William Lee Miller, are likely to find the current renewal of interest in religion and politics both familiar and ironic. Familiar, because it highlights the relation of f...

Out next Pub Theology gathering will be Tuesday, October 1 at 8:00pm at the Peanut Barrel. We are going to be discussing the topic of "Sin and Salvation." We are going to talk about how we define sin, who get's to define it, and how we escape it. It should be a great conversation.

We'd love to have you join us!

Here are some quotes to get us started:

"In a closed society where everybody's guilty, the only crime is getting caught. In a world of thieves, the only final sin is stupidity."" - Hunter S. Thompson

"I am no longer sure of anything. If I satiate my desires, I sin but I deliver myself from them; if I refuse to satisfy them, they infect the whole soul." - John-Paul Sartre

"One of the peculiar sins of the twentieth century which we've developed to a very high level is the sin of credulity. It has been said that when human beings stop believing in God they believe in nothing. The truth is much worse: they believe in anything." - Malcolm Muggeridge

"Be a sinner and sin strongly, but more strongly have faith and rejoice in Christ." - Martin Luther

And here are a few quotes regarding peacemaking to get us started in thinking about what peacemaking means:

“Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.” – Albert Einstein

“Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.” – John F. Kennedy

“It is easier to lead men to combat, stirring up their passion, than to restrain them and direct them toward the patient labors of peace.” – Andre Gide

Pub Theology is back in full swing this semester. We will meet weekly on TUESDAY nights at 8:00pm at “The Peanut Barrel” in downtown East Lansing. The topic for the week will be: “The Intersection of Violence and Justice”

If you are new to Pub Theology - just look for the table with the Pub Theology sign with the image like the one above.

Here's a couple of articles to get us started:

https://www.amacad.org/daedalus/reimagining-justice-challenges-violence-punitive-excess

http://www.kyoolee.net/violence__law_and_justice_in_a_global_age_-_david_held.pdf

https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/myths-and-realities-understanding-recent-trends-violent-crime?gad_source=1

The recent rise in crime is extraordinarily complex. Policymakers and the public should not jump to conclusions or expect easy answers.

It is the first Tuesday of the month - so we are meeting tonight at the Peanut Barrel for Pub Theology at 8:00pm. Our topic for the night is: "The Theology of Rights, Laws, and Responsibilities" Below is one of the questions that we are going to tackle tonight.

In the United States there is a lot of talk about the innate rights of humankind, so codified in the Constitution, others that we take for granted. What are some things that you consider basic human rights? Does your faith background or belief system influence what you believe to be a “human right?”

What are your thoughts?

06/11/2024

We are still in our summer schedule. So we are off tonight, but we are meeting next week Tuesday at the peanut barrel for another discussion. We’re gonna be talking about the topic of “Law” and how we are called to follow God’s laws, society’s laws, and the laws of our government - and how those intersect.

Hope you can join us!
