Welcome back to campus, Spartans! Over the summer, many students went on various study abroad programs throughout the world. Biomedical engineering student, Rebecca Jones, went on the Trending Technologies in Madrid program where she and a group of students studied engineering and Spanish while exploring and staying in a Spanish culture. See what she has to say about her experience:

"Studying abroad in Spain was a learning experience far beyond the classroom. But I did learn a few things in the classroom that added to the richness of my experience. In our Trending Technologies class, we had the opportunity to hear from ten engineering professors at the Madrid Polytechnic University and then tour their labs. As someone who has done research for two years at MSU, I enjoyed the lab tours the most. Talking to Spanish professors who were doing research in the same field as me brought a new perspective to the work I’m doing. It showed me that people around the world are working to solve the same problems as me, and if we work together, we can change the world. Traveling abroad brought added meaning to my education in America, and taught me that the world isn’t such a big place once you understand another culture."

Every summer, MSU Engineering offers a program in Lyon, France at École Catholique d'Arts et Métiers (ECAM). This program lasts 5 1/2 weeks, from the beginning of June to mid-July. Students learn about sustainability and engineering and also enroll in a French language course. They also have the opportunity to travel to different cities in both France and Switzerland.

The following pictures are from student Alyse Way when she went on this program with other MSU students. The first was taken on one of their day trips to the Rhone-Alpes region where they visited a Reblochon cheese farm. The second and third picture were taken in front of the ECAM school and on the grounds.

Want to learn about programs in Spain? Student Demetrius Moncrease went on a 6 week Summer study abroad in Spain, where he took classes in Composite Materials from Professor Carl Boehlert. He also took a Spanish class taught at the Universidad Polytechnica in Madrid.

While he was there, he got the chance to travel a bit around the country. The first picture was taken at the Oceanographic in Valencia, Spain. The second photo is of the Guggenheim Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art by Canadian-American Frank Gentry. This was taken in Bilbao, Spain, where the locals speak a different language (Basque) than the rest of the country. The third picture was taken in a northern region of Spain of San Sebastian, where the temperature is always around 70 degrees Fahrenheit despite the time of year.
