AEASP MSU

AEASP MSU AEA Summer Program at MSU. Prepares students from traditionally underrepresented communities for graduate study in Economics and related fields.

From the AEA:
"First begun in 1974, the program prepares talented undergraduates from under-represented groups for doctoral programs in Economics and related disciplines. With a goal of broadening participation, the AEA Summer Training and Scholarship Program (AEASP) uniquely and successfully enables students to solidify technical and other economic skills to meet the rigors of graduate study. The

re are substantial concerns regarding the participation of traditionally under-represented groups in the economics profession. For instance, recent NSF data record that fewer than seven percent of doctorate degrees earned by US citizens are awarded to African Americans and Hispanics in a typical year and less than a third of doctorates are awarded to women. Consequently, the outlook and the science in the economics profession lack important insights and perspectives; implying that policy analyses, recommendations and implementations fall short of what can be achieved. In light of these issues, the purpose of the Summer Training Program is to provide a strong basis for the professional success of individuals from diverse backgrounds who will inform the profession and broaden the scope and impact of high quality research agendas that are pursued in economics and in related fields.

Please join us in congratulating our colleague Lisa D. Cook on her Senate confirmation as a Governor of the Federal Reserve System. In addition to bringing her expertise in macroeconomics, innovation, and development economics to the Board, she is making history as the first African American woman on the Board.

She will also be the second faculty member connected to the MSU Economics department to serve on the Board. Andrew Brimmer was on the faculty before being named to the Board in 1966 and was the first African American to serve as a Fed governor. Congratulations and good luck, Governor Cook!

I want to bring to your attention opportunities for current juniors and seniors in the New York Fed’s Research and Statistics Group starting in the summer of 2021.

Analysts play an integral role in the research and policy work of New York Fed economists on topics including macroeconomics, microeconomics, banking and payment systems, capital markets, and international economics. Analysts provide support with data analysis and visualization, econometric or statistical models, and public policy reports. The New York Fed has a highly respected program for full-time Research Analysts who join for two years after graduating college and then successfully pursue graduate school, private-sector or public-sector positions. RAs have consistently been accepted by the very best U.S. graduate programs in economics and finance as well as in law and public policy.

The junior Analyst internship program is an excellent opportunity to experience the work of an analyst. Junior summer analysts will support economists with ongoing projects, assisting in similar ways as full-time Analysts. Many participants of the internship program have returned as full-time RAs upon graduation.

They seek candidates who have records of strong scholarship and academic curiosity. Analysts usually have a background in economics, policy, mathematics, or computer science, though a major in one of these fields is not a necessity. Successful candidates often have an interest in academic research, and many are considering careers in economic research, public policy, public service, or related fields.

They explicitly seek candidates from a wide range of backgrounds, particularly those that are typically underrepresented in the economics profession. These programs are at the beginning of the “pipeline” to an economics career, so it is important to them that they recruit a diverse cohort of Analysts each year.

Applications for Research Analyst positions (starting in Summer 2022) are being accepted now, on a rolling basis, at https://www.newyorkfed.org/research/careers/research_analysts/index.html. Candidates should apply by November 1st and are strongly encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

Applications for Junior Analyst internships are also being accepted (graduating in Winter 2022 or Spring 2023). These positions are posted at https://www.newyorkfed.org/careers/student-programs-and-internships. Candidates should apply by November 1st.

Please email [email protected] with any questions.

Immediate opening at Princeton- Pre-Doc Research Assistant- Economics (Labor)

While they are looking to hire someone sooner rather than later, they can be flexible, for example, if there is a student who anticipates graduating in Dec/Jan. They also would love to have this opening shared with any recent graduates who may still be looking for the right position. As of now, plans are still moving ahead for full in-person operations starting August 28. This RA position would be in-person, not remote.
