The Asian Studies Center at Michigan State University, named a National Undergraduate Resource Center (Title VI NRC) since 2000 by the U.S. Department of Education, directs one of the largest, most diverse programs of education about Asia in the Midwest. Unlike other programs, the Center is distinguished by its approach to East, South, Central, North, West, and Southeast Asia in the design of its

The Japan Foundation, New York and Social Science Research Council are pleased to announce the launch of the “SSRC–JF Next Generation Japan Studies Development Program,” an initiative designed to cultivate interest in Japan and support the development of the next generation of scholars in Japanese Studies.

This initiative comprises three components:
(1) Study Tour Grant: SSRC-JF Next Gen Japan Study Tour Grants – Social Science Research Council (SSRC)
(2) Postdoctoral Fellowship: SSRC-JF Next Gen Japan Postdoctoral Fellowship – Social Science Research Council (SSRC)
(3) Visiting Professor Grants: SSRC-JF Next Gen Japan Visiting Professor Grants – Social Science Research Council (SSRC)

📢📢📢 Call for Proposals

Smith College will host the 2026 New England Conference of the Association for Asian Studies (NEAAS) on Saturday, November 14, 2026, in Northampton, Massachusetts. The annual conference provides a vibrant forum for scholars in New England and beyond to share research and engage in interdisciplinary conversations on Asia.

The 2026 conference theme, “Border Crossings,” invites participants to explore crossings that are geographic, disciplinary, conceptual, and relational — including those between human and nonhuman worlds, subject and object, as well as critical reflections on the very concept of borders. Proposals on any Asia-related topic are also welcome.

In addition to traditional paper and panel presentations, the conference will feature guided tours of Asia-related collections at Smith College, including Special Collections and the Smith College Museum of Art.

Mark your calendars! The 63rd Annual East Lansing Art Festival (ELAF) is just a little more than TWO WEEKS away.

This year’s ELAF will feature nearly 200 artists, live performances from a range of performers including magic, indigenous dancing, African drumming and music as well as local food vendors and the ever-popular Artist demonstration area. The event will be held along Albert Avenue from Grove to Bailey streets.

ELAF will take place from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, May 16, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, May 17.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS | GETSEA Southeast Asia PhD Mentoring Clusters (Fall 2026–2028)

The Getsea - A Consortium of Centers for Southeast Asian Studies invites Southeast Asia–focused faculty at U.S. institutions to apply to design and lead PhD mentoring clusters for early-stage doctoral students over a two-year period.

This initiative aims to strengthen mentorship, cohort-building, and collaborative engagement among Southeast Asia graduate students at a time of reduced funding and fewer in-person opportunities in the field.

Are you a data-savvy MSU student who enjoys turning numbers into meaningful insights? The Asian Studies Center is looking for a motivated Research Assistant, hourly-pay position, to help analyze 10–15 years of grant and program data and tell the story of the center's impact.

In this role, you’ll work hands-on with institutional data—cleaning, analyzing, and transforming it into compelling reports and visualizations that highlight how the Center supports students, faculty, and international engagement.

💡Ideal for students in Data Science, Information Science, Statistics, or related fields who are detail-oriented, organized, and efficient in communication.
