Tropos Graduate Conference and Journal

Tropos Graduate Conference and Journal TROPOS is a conference and online journal from the graduate students of the Department of Romance and Classical Studies at Michigan State University.

TROPOS (way of life, manner, style) is a conference and online journal from the graduate students in the Department of Romance and Classical Studies at Michigan State University. It was first published in 1971 and is one of the longest graduate student-edited journals in Romance Studies in North America. TROPOS constitutes an effort to create an intellectual space where graduate students could sha

re their ideas. Along these years, both journal and conference have been organized, written, and published exclusively by our department’s graduate students and its continuity depends upon the tenacity of the editorial team, advisors, and the rest of the student body.

Today we get to know Hannah! She is a PhD Student in French and Francophone Studies.
RCS: What has been your last or favorite project or endeavor? 🙋‍♀️📚👩‍🏫. Hannah: I am currently preparing to teach WS 201: Introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies this summer for the Center for Gender in Global Context. This will be my first time teaching the class and I am really looking forward to it!

RCS: What is your favorite dish? 🍰🇫🇷
Hannah: I can’t pick just one but tarte flambée is one of my favorites. It’s a typical Alsatian dish and it has crème fraîche, lardons (think bacon or pork belly), and thin sliced onions on a thin dough crust. It’s cooked in a wood burning stove and it’s delicious.

RCS: What has been your favorite place to live, do research or visit?
Hannah: Again it’s hard to pick one but I love studying and working in Belgium. I have worked with the Global Finance in Belgium study abroad program for several years, leading a community service project and teaching Finance 393 (a French business and culture course). It’s a beautiful country, the food is great, and the people are kind. 🇧🇪🏦

RCS: What advice would you give to your college self?
Hannah: It’s ok to make mistakes, especially when you’re trying something new. 👩‍🎓🤷🏽‍♀️💁🏽‍♀️

RCS: If you were to stay on a desert island for a week with all basic necessities covered and you were rescued after a week, what would be the four objects you would bring with you?
Hannah: My dog and 3 titles from my reading list for my PhD exams. 🐕‍🦺🐾🦴📚📖

Thank you Hannah for answering our questions!
