Hi Hillelers,

PLEASE SHARE WITH EMU FRIENDS!!!

The Michigan Consortium for Israel Studies, an academic group consisting of seven colleges and universities (Eastern Michigan U, Western Michigan U, Central Michigan U, Northern Michigan U. SVSU, Albion College, and U of Detroit, Mercy) is offering its first study abroad opportunity, June 7-July 7, 2022. Students from these schools will take two classes (6 EMU credits) at the University of Tel Aviv--one from a team of US professors (I will be one of the faculty) and one from a Tel Aviv faculty member. Students will also tour Israel with the US faculty!

Thanks to a grant of $100,000 from the Nora and Guy Barron Fund, air fare, housing at Tel Aviv University, Israel tourism, and some meals will be covered for all students who embark on this study abroad experience. Students will only be responsible for tuition, fees, and whatever on-the- ground expenses they may incur. this is, without question the opportunity of a lifetime.

I am posting a flyer with some pertinent information. It has a registration site for a live Zoom session so you can find out more. Please think about participating.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me.

In 2017, with the help of Harlene and Henry Appelman, the Eastern Michigan University Center for Jewish Studies held its first annual Hanukkah event. (Prior to that, our university had been a VERY Christmassy kind of place, with little opportunity for happy holiday diversity.) As Hanukkah comes so very early this year, we will be holding a post-Hanukkah celebration on Wednesday, December 8, at 7:00 PM in the EMU Student Center Auditorium. Our guests will be Doni Zasloff and Eric Lindberg, founding members of the widely acclaimed bluegrass band, Nefesh Mountain. They will sing, tell stories, and talk about: “Jews, Bluegrass, and Other 'American' Musics.” Admission is free—but EMU requires everyone to wear masks inside buildings. Join us for a fabulous time! (If you can’t make it in-person, you can also Zoom in at: tinyurl.com/nefeshmountain.)

The Eastern Michigan University Center for Jewish Studies is delighted to host Representative Elissa Slotkin of Michigan’s 8th Congressional District, on our campus:

Thursday, October 14, 7:30 PM,

in the EMU Student Center Auditorium.

Representative Slotkin will discuss, among other things, growing up Jewish on a farm in Holly, Michigan; working as a CIA analyst who did three tours in Iraq alongside the US military; and serving in the US House. Representative Slotkin is a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security—where she chairs the Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence—and the House Committee on Armed Services. She will consider such matters as the resurgence of antisemitism in the twenty-first century (both in the US and abroad), America’s involvement in the Middle East, and the importance of Israel to US foreign policy.

This presentation is the first, on-campus, Center for Jewish Studies event since the beginning of Covid. There will be social distancing, and all audience members will be required to wear masks. There is no cost to attend this program.

You can also watch the conversation in real-time, online, but registration is required at:

This presentation is co-sponsored by Hillel at Eastern Michigan University, The EMU College Democrats, and the Harold Grinspoon Foundation.

The Eastern Michigan University Center for Jewish Studies Presents:

Dr. Catherine Cangany, “Reams of Hate: The Legacy of Henry Ford's Antisemitic Newspaper”

Monday, September 13 7:00 PM
FREE on Zoom: tinyurl.com/FordPaper

2019 marked the centennial of Henry Ford’s wildly popular antisemitic newspaper, The Dearborn Independent—in its day, the second-most widely read paper in the United States. Despite the Independent’s international reach and considerable backing from the Ford empire, the Jewish community ultimately prevailed against it, shutting down the paper in 1927. And yet, even in 2021, the Independent lives on. Its articles are still in print, now experiencing unprecedented reach, popularity, and power through social media, catalyzing antisemitic harassment and influencing extremist writings.

The Eastern Michigan University Center for Jewish Studies invites you to join Catherine Cangany, PhD, executive director of Jewish Historical Society of Michigan, for an eye-opening look at how this chapter in our past is still very much present. Prior to joining JHSM in 2018, Dr. Cangany was associate professor of history at the University of Notre Dame. She is the author of Frontier Seaport: Detroit's Transformation into an Atlantic Entrepot (University of Chicago Press, 2014). She received her PhD in history from the University of Michigan.

This presentation is co-sponsored by Hillel at Eastern Michigan University and the Harold Grinspoon Foundation.
