As Bike Month comes to a close, we’re taking a look back at one of the projects that helped reshape how Spartans move around campus. 🚲💚

The Bogue Street protected bike path was created to improve safety, reduce conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists, and make active transportation more accessible for the campus community. What started as a pilot project has become part of MSU’s ongoing commitment to creating a safer, more sustainable campus.

Whether you bike to class, work, or simply for fun, every ride helps build a healthier and more connected Spartan community.

Two Mechanical Engineering Design Day teams co-sponsored by MSU Bikes and Mary Free Bed reimagined abandoned bicycles as functional prosthetic devices using repurposed bike components.

Building on a partnership with certified prosthetist Ben Hogan and MSU Bikes Sustainable Transportation Manager Tim Potter, the teams refined an above-the-knee prosthetic made entirely from bicycle parts.

Each year, hundreds of bikes are left behind on campus. Instead of letting those materials go to waste, students transformed them into affordable, durable prosthetic prototypes designed to improve mobility for individuals who may not otherwise have access to modern prosthetic care.

As we celebrate 20 years of MSU Bikes, we’re also celebrating someone who helped shape its story along the way, Tim Potter.

Tim’s dedication, passion, and commitment to the campus biking community have made a lasting impact on countless Spartans over the years. Through his work with MSU Bikes, he helped support safer riding, sustainable transportation, and a welcoming community centered around cycling at Michigan State University.

As Tim enters retirement, we want to thank him for the years he spent helping keep campus moving and for the positive influence he’s had on the MSU community.

Congratulations on your retirement, Tim, and thank you for everything. 💚

This year marks 20 years of MSU Bikes helping keep Spartans moving!

What began in the early 2000s as the MSU Bike Project has grown into an important part of campus life at Michigan State University. Co-founded in 2003 by Gus Gosselin, affectionately known as the “Godfather” of the MSU Bikes Service Center, and Terry Link, the project laid the foundation for what would eventually become the MSU Bikes Service Center in 2006.

Since then, MSU Bikes has supported the campus community through bike education, repairs, maintenance resources, and sustainable transportation initiatives that help Spartans ride safer, smarter, and more sustainably.

As transportation costs and gas prices continue to fluctuate, biking remains an affordable, accessible, and sustainable option for many students, faculty, and staff navigating campus each day.

For two decades, MSU Bikes has helped create a campus culture centered around mobility, sustainability, and community. Here’s to 20 years of pedals, pathways, and Spartan pride.
