Eight distinguished alumni of the Michigan State University College of Engineering were honored with 2026 Alumni Awards on Saturday, April 25, at MSU’s Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center.

Interim Engineering Dean John Papapolymerou said the annual celebration honors graduates for their outstanding professional and personal accomplishments. Awards are presented each spring in East Lansing.

“These world-class alumni are living examples of how Spartan Engineers improve our communities and world every day,” Papapolymerou said. “We extend our sincere congratulations to each of them and celebrate their accomplishments and impact.”

The 2026 Computer Science and Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award goes to Salil Prabhakar, Ph.D., 2001.

Salil Prabhakar is the founder and CEO of OptiML Vision, Inc., where he is building Verifiable Live Identity (VLI) - a new identity architecture that makes impersonation fail by design. He previously co-founded Delta ID, a pioneer in mobile biometrics, where his team developed touchless iris recognition deployed on consumer devices. Delta ID was successfully acquired. He is an expert in the area of biometrics - fingerprints and iris scanning technology that are deployed at a global scale.

He is a founding architect for biometrics for India’s UIDAI / Aadhaar system, the world’s largest ID system with 1.4 billion people enrolled.

He is a Fellow of IEEE, IAPR and SPIE. He has co-authored 50+ publications (14,000+ Google Citations), two editions of the award-winning Handbook of Fingerprint Recognition, five book chapters, and eight edited proceedings.

He has several patents granted and pending. He has served as an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (TPAMI), SPIE Journal of Electronic Imaging, EURASIP Journal of Image and Video Processing, Elsevier Pattern Recognition, and Current Bioinformatics.

He was lead guest co-editor of April 2007 IEEE TPAMI Biometrics Special Issue.

He has been a co-chair/program chair for 10+ IEEE, IAPR and SPIE conferences, was general co-chair of the 5th International Conference on Biometrics in 2012 in New Delhi. He was vice president - finance of IEEE.

We are delighted to share that Dr. Borzoo Bonakdarpour, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, and colleagues from the University of Florida - Gainesville have secured funding from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) in the amount of $815,000. Borzoo is the PI from MSU.

Abstract:
Binary code similarity detection is the process of comparing two or more binary code segments to identify similarities and differences, without relying on the source code. This technique is crucial for various functional and security applications like preserving functional objectives after software updates and patching, vulnerability detection, malware analysis, and code reuse identification, especially when the source code is unavailable. Existing approaches such as combining static and dynamic analysis techniques as well as learning-based methods often only analyze the structure of the code or the input/output relation and miss the semantics similarity of the code in satisfying complex functional and security properties.
QUBICS will introduce several novel techniques to quantify similarity between a legacy and an updated binary-level code with respect to temporal formal specification of properties of interest. Our proposed techniques are based on statistical model checking (SMC). The results of the proposed project will ensure access to robust code analysis tools that can provide quantifiable confidence in similarity between the original and revised software artifacts with respect to their formal specifications without having access to the source code.

Congratulations to our 2025-26 Computer Science and Engineering Graduate Student Awardees!

Fitch H. Beach Award for Outstanding Doctoral Research
The Fitch Beach Award is the most prestigious research competition in the College of Engineering. Established by Janet M. Beatty in honor of her uncle, Fitch H. Beach, this award recognizes the most outstanding PhD student researchers within the College of Engineering. The faculty within each department selected one nominee, and the award was judged based on nominees’ records and presentations.
- Jinghan Jia, First Place Presentation Award & Computer Science and Engineering Departmental Winner (Advisor: Sijia Liu)

Outstanding Graduate Student Awards
This annual award recognizes the most outstanding graduate student from each doctoral program in the College of Engineering. These outstanding PhD students were selected by the faculty within their program, and each receive a $1,000 stipend, certificate, and a medal to be worn at graduation which will be presented at a Graduate Awards ceremony later this month.
- Pengfei He, Computer Science and Engineering (Advisor: Jiliang Tang)

3 Minute Thesis (3MT) Graduate Student Awards
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition celebrates the exciting research conducted by graduate students around the world. Developed by The University of Queensland, the competition cultivates graduate students’ academic, presentation, and research communication skills.
The faculty within each department selected one nominee, and the award was judged based on nominees’ 3MT® presentations. Winners receive stipends, a desk trophy, and a certificate which will be presented at a Graduate Awards ceremony later this month.
- Tzu-Han Hsu, Computer Science and Engineering Departmental Winner (Advisor: Borzoo Bonakdarpour)
