Wonderful work by Michigan State University College of Education colleague Amelia Wenk Gotwals who played a central role in developing OpenSciEd, an open-access, free K-5 science curriculum aligned with Next Gen Science Standards!

Before its national launch in spring 2026, the curriculum was piloted by more than 900 teachers across nine states, including Michigan.

“Students are reading, writing, speaking and listening as part of doing science,” Gotwals said. “We saw an opportunity to support teachers with materials that bring those pieces together.”

This week is UNESCO's first Culture and Arts Education Week!

As they explain, "[c]ulture and arts education fosters creativity, critical thinking and imagination, while nurturing a sense of belonging and mutual understanding. It supports intercultural dialogue, economic resilience, social cohesion, and peace. It empowers learners to engage with their own cultural heritage and that of others, and to become active and responsible members of their communities and beyond."

Anyone in our community engaged in the culture & arts education space?

The Office of International Studies in Education advances global perspectives in teaching, research, and outreach.

What happens when creativity is placed at the heart of learning?

Culture and arts education fosters empathy, dialogue and understanding. It also helps learners develop essential skills such as imagination, critical thinking, resilience, confidence and collaboration, while strengthening social cohesion and preserving cultural diversity.

From 25–31 May 2026, the first UNESCO Culture and Arts Education Week will take place under the theme “Culture and arts education for lasting peace.”

UNESCO’s Implementation Guidance for the Framework for Culture and Arts Education translates global commitments into practical action. With recommendations, guiding questions and examples from 52 countries, it supports policymakers, educators and cultural actors in integrating culture and the arts across formal, non-formal and informal learning.

As UNESCO calls on schools, cultural institutions, artists, youth and communities worldwide to take part, this week is a reminder that creativity is not only a universal language; it is also a powerful force for building peace.

Since 2007, the Post-BA World Language Teacher Certification Program (WLTCP) offers a high-quality, cost-effective 2-year pathway to a rewarding career in language education for individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree in any field and are fluent in Spanish or Mandarin Chinese. You will earn both a teaching certificate AND a Master’s Degree!

The 1st year consists of an internship with a veteran mentor teacher in Michigan school districts. The 2nd year offers a residency placement where you will be a teacher-of-record in a US school district, with Michigan State University College of Education support and coursework. Talk about excellent work experience!

The program starts fall semester (August), but we take applicants year-round so it’s always a good time to apply! (See link in comments.)

Office of International Studies in Education (OISE) supports WLTCP as part of its role in advancing global perspectives in teaching, research, and outreach.

Insights from UNESCO on Higher Ed: "In 2024, there were 114 women enrolled in higher education for every 100 men globally...Yet important disparities persist. Women remain underrepresented at doctoral level and occupy only around one quarter of senior leadership positions in academia."

Gender parity in higher education enrolment is becoming a reality across much of the world.

In 2024, there were 114 women enrolled in higher education for every 100 men globally. Regions such as Central and Southern Asia have made significant progress, moving from 68 women per 100 men in 2000 to near parity by 2023.

Yet important disparities persist. Women remain underrepresented at doctoral level and occupy only around one quarter of senior leadership positions in academia.

These figures show that access alone is not enough. Advancing gender equality in higher education also requires stronger representation in research, leadership and decision-making.

UNESCO works with countries and partners to advance more inclusive higher education systems and support equal opportunities for women throughout academic and professional life.
