Up next we have Racine Celeste!

Racine hails from the Pacific Northwest and brings an incredible powerhouse of skills, knowledge and experience to our students.

As a performer with years of experience in Halloween Haunts, Rennaissance Faires, variety and burlesque shows and balloon busking, Racine brings an incredible knowledge of clown history, the psychology of laughter and humour, as well as unique philosophies about "clowning outside the box."

Racine is a creative balloon artist whose designs can amaze while her presence and presentation entertains the entire audience, not just the recipient of the balloon sculpture. She engages, enthrals and entertains with her quick wit and playful and often interactive sculptures.

As Sizzle, she is able to entertain audiences of all ages with her infectious laugh, good humour and sharp wit.

We are proud to have Barry Mitchell on our faculty this year!

Barry was formerly a street magician in the New Orleans French Quarter. He was a regular opening act for country music stars, including working as the featured comedian at Dolly Parton’s Stampede Dinner Attraction.

Barry spent time as a lecturer at the world famous Magic Castle in Hollywood and the Magic Circle in London, England. He has formerly performed and taught in almost every US state plus England, Denmark, Australia, Mexico, the Bahamas and South Africa. He continues to invent magic tricks, author motivational stories, books, and DVDs.

All this former and continuing experience means he has been successfully entertaining for over three decades.

With more than three decades of working with children, Barry has learned a trick or two. These “tricks” include just the right balance of what audiences love . . . humor, magic, storytelling, and a talking turtle that steals every show. Sam the Turtle is a perfect example of the power of entertaining and educating children. A puppet can hold the attention of all ages. More importantly, children “listen and remember” when Sam speaks. How do we change the future? Barry gives audiences a reason to listen and learn.

Joel Jeske is a three time New York Drama Desk nominated actor, artist, writer, and clown. A multi-disciplinary artist at crossroads of art, performance, and mixed media; his twenty seven year national and international career has flourished in over 15 countries. He has performed, consulted, and created work for Broadway musicals, theater, circus, variety, and festivals including Cirque du Soleil, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, GOP Variete, Big Apple Circus, and SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS: The Broadway Musical.

His most recent production, The ARTIST will be with you in a Moment, is an immersive solo comedy performance about art, artists, and embracing individual creativity. Described by critics as a “masterful exhibition of contemporary art and clowning” with “a side-splitting performance executed to perfection,” the audience is lead through an absurdist art show and evening of performance pieces where personal initiative, inspiration, playfulness, and creativity are given the greatest rewards. In the end, we learn through Joel Jeske’s hilarious teachings that we are all artists.

Joel has taught both nationally and internationally to students, industry professionals, and corporate clients. As associate artistic director of the New York theater company Parallel Exit, he has conducted classes and workshops for acting programs and universities across the country focusing on inspiring the creative process to create great performances, bonding teamwork, and discovering that next big idea.

We are also one of the premiere educational opportunities for the men and women who don the red suit and visit families around the Christmas holiday season!

Today we highlight the power couple who are leading our Christmas Performance Track, Stephen and Debra Gillham

Steve is Santa. He first portrayed Santa in 2004 for UNC Children’s Hospital and has been hooked ever since. Prior to Santa, Steve served as a BSA Scoutmaster and it was during that time he perfected his art of storytelling. Steve skillfully painted vivid mental pictures for the boy scouts while they listened to ‘toe curling’ ghost stories around the campfire. The proof is in the detail as he loves to say.

When he became Santa, he needed new stories to provide the children with mental pictures of the North Pole and how he – Santa – lived and worked. Questions raised by elementary children were answered in earnest and his imagination knows no limits. The stories flowed to answer questions and in turn props were created to further authenticate the stories and give visual proof that yes, he is Santa.

Steve loves to share his ideas with others- knowing he can only see a limited number of children during his Santa career.

In her previous life, Debra was a pediatric nurse – for over 35 years.

Initially, she planned to be a Mrs. Claus to Steve’s Santa. But, she knew that their Santa experience would be better served in another capacity after only one event and “the driver” was born.

Being “the driver” allowed her to blend into the crowd and feed information about the children, secretly without attracting the children’s attention. Doing this enabled Steve’s Santa to know everything about the children without anyone outwardly telling Santa anything. This technique became known by their clients as “Smart Santa” and, once experienced, is an always requested service.

Steve and Deb became one of their areas most requested Santa Claus, and while Steve had the stories, Deb had the intuition. Smart Santa appears magical to the families, but in reality, the magic was Deb’s uncanny ability to read children and know the right thing to say into Santa’s ear. Of course, this made Santa look like one of the most sensitive, intelligent, caring, and compassionate men ever to come along. But in truth, it was 90% Debra and Steve’s uncanny ability to make his mind go blank and open. Together they are quite the team.

Come learn from two of the greats from the Christmas Performance, theatre and variety arts worlds!

Greg DeSanto has been a professional clown for over 40 years. A Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Clown College graduate, Greg worked on the show for 10 years eventually becoming a producing clown. He has performed at Madison Square Garden, the White House, and is the second living American clown ever to be on a US postage stamp, the first being International Clown Hall of Fame and Research Center Inductee Master Clown Lou Jacobs. Clowning has taken Greg all over the world...

Recalling his days at the Ringling show Greg notes his favorite performer to work with was Karen who later became his wife and partner in clowning for many years. She started in 1993 and they worked together full time until 2007 when she became executive driector of Central Wisconsin Boys and girls Clubs.

A while after meeting Karen they took off from Ringling for other experiences. Greg was a lead performer with the Big Apple Circus in New York City from 1996-97 and then again from 2005-2006. This was quite a change from the huge circus tents and he really thrived in this setting of a single ring show. Greg helped write and create many clown skits and bits for the Big Apple Circus.

Greg currently serves as the Executive Director of the International Clown Hall of Fame and Research Center. It is the only museum that is singularly devoted to celebrating the greatest clowns on earth and houses the largest collection of clown artifacts in the world.

Greg’s great passion for clown history has brought him to where he is now. “I am a temporary care taker of the museum. This is my passion. The old clowns when I started out showed me great kindness and they encouraged me. Now it is my time to give back to the younger clowns and become an old timer myself. It’s important to give back.”

Greg notes that education is important for clowns, “I think you are always a student. You never stop learning. Lou Jacobs was teaching us young kids and maybe thinking – I don’t know … this is the future, maybe in 60 years these people will be teaching. Put your own twist on it do your own unique thing… It is a passing of a torch. That’s how it stays alive and bright.”

Let's talk about our incredible instructors for this upcoming year!

Starting with the first of our headliners - Steve Smith!

Steve Smith began his career in clowning as a graduate of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College, Class of 1971. He then toured with The Greatest Show on Earth for six seasons before leaving the show and moving to Chicago, Illinois, where he attended the Goodman School of Drama at the Art Institute of Chicago (now The Theatre School at DePaul University), earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in acting.

At that time, he also hosted a children's television series called "Kidding Around" for the local NBC affiliate, WMAQ-TV. Steve was the recipient of five Emmy Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Children's Television and was a favorite among viewers for seven seasons.

Steve's connection with Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey resumed when he became Director of Clown College in 1985, a post he held for ten years. He was also the director of the 123rd edition of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus

Steve became involved with the staging of numerous performances and productions from the off-Broadway hit "The It Girl" to programs for Walt Disney World to shipboard entertainment with Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. He also worked with Academy Award-winning animator/cartoonist Chuck Jones as Talent Development Coordinator for Chuck Jones Enterprises, where he continued to work with his boyhood hero until Mr. Jones's death in 2002.

In 2005, Smith started working with the Big Apple Circus as their Guest Director for four productions, a collaboration that extended through five seasons, ending in 2010.

In 2011, Steve began his stint as Creative Director for Circus Arts Conservatory in Sarasota, Florida. And on April 1, 2015, he joined Circus Center, San Francisco’s circus training and performing arts center, as its Creative Director.
