🌟 Leadership Project Spotlight 🌟

Amber Yang (’25) at Apple Valley Village, Minnesota, worked to enhance the structure of end-of-life bedside procedures to provide emotional and spiritual support for residents, families, and staff members. Amber’s goals included fostering an environment of compassion and support by ensuring 100% of mentor staff members were trained on bedside service procedures and achieving a satisfaction rate of 85% or higher on post-procedure surveys. To accomplish these objectives, Amber reevaluated the bedside service procedures, educated mentor staff members, and added a procedure brochure to admission packets. Post-implementation survey results demonstrated measurable improvement, including a two-point increase on a five-point rating scale for bedside service procedures following staff education. Satisfaction among families, residents, and staff members also increased, with 57% of respondents reporting they were “very satisfied.” Overall, Amber’s project successfully strengthened end-of-life bedside procedures, helping ensure compassionate, emotional, and spiritual support for everyone involved.

🌟 Leadership Project Spotlight 🌟

Josephine Weinand (’25) at The Marquardt, Wisconsin, worked to enhance bereavement care support processes by implementing a “Dignity Quilt” initiative designed to leave families with a positive and compassionate perception of the care their loved one received. The process includes covering residents with a dignity quilt during their final exit from the facility, reciting a prayer, and observing a respectful moment of silence. Josephine’s goals included improving staff satisfaction with the bereavement support process by 20% within four weeks and achieving an average family recommendation rating of 60% or higher. To accomplish these goals, she educated the hospice team, frontline staff, supervisors, and DON on the new process and ensured the dignity quit bin in an accessible location for all staff members. Post-implementation surveys showed encouraging outcomes, including an 108.72% increase in staff responses to the question, “how personally fulfilled is our post-mortem process for you?” Families also reported an average recommendation rating of 73.3%. Overall, Josephine’s project successfully enhanced the bereavement care support process for both families and staff members while ensuring each resident is treated with dignity and respect.

The 2026 National ACHCA Convention & Expo took place on April 20-23 in Orlando, FL. Several HCAD students had the opportunity to network with industry professionals, attend educational sessions, share and celebrate their accomplishments, and much more.

This year we had six students presenting their research: Madi Bergschnieder ('28), Inessah Cernohous ('27), Shay Thomson ('27), Michael Pittenger ('27), Em McCabe ('27), and Helena Martinson ('27), and Sara Lacoursiere (‘26), with Madi Bergchnieder as the winner of this year's National Student Poster Competition!

Representing our student chapter of ACHCA were Grace Krenn ('27) as President and Inessah Cernohous ('27) as Vice President.

In continuation of last year's efforts, the National ACHCA Board transitioned the panel of advisors to new appointees for the student, AIT, and emerging leader advisor. The new inductees to these roles are, respectively, Grace Krenn ('27), Delia Pullen ('26), and Michael Beckfield ('23).

A special thank you to our student volunteers: Taslima Keefe ('27), Wyatt Westergren ('27), Adrienne Toberman ('27), and Nikayli Tillery ('28). We would also like to thank The American College of Health Care Administrators (ACHCA) for making this all possible. Your generous support is incredibly valued and appreciated by us all.

We hope to see everyone again next year! If you are interested in attending for the first time, feel free to reach out for more information.

🌟 Leadership Project Spotlight 🌟

Ella VanderBloemen (’25) at Clement Manor, Wisconsin, worked to enhance the new admission screening process by implementing the Fast Medical online assessment tool. This tool helps determine care level criteria, ensuring residents are accurately screened for the level of assistance they need. Ella’s goals included eliminating the outdated point-based pre-admission assessment system, defining clear criteria for each care level, and streamlining the process through a single online assessment. To achieve these objectives, data from the previous system was analyzed to identify areas for improvement, the interdisciplinary team (IDT) team was trained on the best practices for using the Fast Medical system, and each step of the new admissions process was evaluated for time efficiency. Based on both the pre-and-post survey results, time spent addressing care-level concerns decreased, and the new assessment system demonstrated more accurate and consistent data collection. Overall, Ella’s project successfully improved the efficiency, accuracy, and consistency of the pre-admissions screening process, helping ensure residents receive the appropriate level of care.
