UTRGV Department of Physics The UTRGV Department of Physics and Astronomy strives for excellence in research and education for future physicists and astronomers.

The department has a strong, well-funded research program and enjoys close research collaborations among scientists in other departments with related research interests. To facilitate such cooperation and collaboration, an interdisciplinary research center - Center for Gravitational Wave Astronomy (CGWA) - has been formed in 2003 that has been supported by NSF and NASA grants over $30M. The department proudly houses the Arecibo Remote Command Center (ARCC).

The day has been established by the United Nations with an intention to promote and encourage charity and philanthropy across the globe. Good morning Vaqueros! Today is the day for the incredible Solar Eclipse and if you do want to watch please take precautions.
The eclipse will start at around 12:00pm and totality will be observed at approximately 1:30pm.
The partial eclipse is not safe to view even for a few seconds.
Regular sunglasses are not safe to view the partial or total eclipse.
Ensure your protective eyewear is rated for looking directly at the sun.

Join us this Friday, January 20, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. (CT) for a very fascinating talk offered by Dr. Dr. Liliana Rivera Sandoval. This event is organized by the American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO). She will share with us her research and prominent scientific discoveries.
Dr. Liliana Rivera Sandoval joined the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in 2021 as an Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy.
