UTRGV School of Music The School of Music consists of over 400 music majors on 2 campuses, with undergraduate and graduate

The UTRGV School of Music consists of over 400 music majors on 2 campuses (Brownsville and Edinburg). Undergraduate programs of study include applied music and music education. Graduate programs include Master of Music degrees in performance, music education, and ethnomusicology. We offer a major within the Bachelor of Arts degree and minors in Applied Music. In addition, we offer teaching fields

for majors in both secondary and all-level Music Teacher Certification. All students majoring in music, in addition to taking courses in general education, theory, and literature of music, pursue excellence in performance in their area/s of major interest. Instruction is offered in voice, guitar, piano, and all of the instruments of the wind band and orchestra.

We are excited to invite you to our annual UTRGV “Día de la Guitarra” Guitar Ensemble Competition & Festival! This year’s festival features guest artists Richard Knepp (USA) and Manuel Espinás (Cuba/Mexico), who will present a concert on April 10 at 7:00 p.m. at the UTRGV Performing Arts Complex.

Middle school and high school guitar ensembles are invited to participate in the UTRGV Día de la Guitarra – Guitar Ensemble Competition & Festival 2026, held at the UTRGV Performing Arts Complex in Edinburg, Texas.

The competition begins at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, and is open to the public. This two-day event offers student ensembles the opportunity to perform in our beautiful auditorium, participate in workshops, masterclasses and attend a concert featuring internationally recognized guest artists.

UTRGV School of Music Auditions for Fall 2026 are coming up! We offer undergraduate Bachelor of Music programs in Music Education (Teacher Certification), Performance, Music Composition, and Music Technology, as well as multiple graduate Master of Music concentrations.

🎶 Profiles in Excellence: Efren Zapata 🎶
Meet Efren Zapata from San Juan — a junior majoring in Music Education in the UTRGV College of Fine Arts.

Efren says his band director was a huge inspiration and influenced who he is today. He saw how much of an impact he had on students, it motivated him to follow a similar path.
