Todays Paws & Pages star is Margaret Minerva! 😺

Margaret Minerva is a former feral single mom found on the wild streets of OKC. It's been almost 5 months and she still (mostly) speaks in hisses and won't let her human pet her but has acquiesced to occasionally sitting on the bed. When not hissing at her human for committing the crime of walking to the bedroom, she enjoys laser chasing and window gazing.

Born in 1881 in Vermillion, Kansas, Augusta Isabelle Corson Metcalfe was the daughter of Edward G. and Mary Davidson Corson. At age four, her family moved to Oklahoma, and by 1893, her father had claimed 640 acres near the mouth of the Turkey River, close to present-day Durham, Oklahoma. Metcalfe would spend the rest of her 89 years living and working on that land.

Homeschooled by her mother, a former teacher, Augusta developed her artistic talents during moments of spare time between schoolwork and ranch chores. Her favorite pastimes included riding horses, rounding up cattle, and sketching the world around her. Recognizing her early talent, her maternal uncle, George Davidson, supported her passion by regularly sending her art supplies.

Despite initial criticism that her paintings were "too detailed," Metcalfe remained dedicated to capturing the essence of Oklahoma ranch life. By the time she reached her 70s, her work had gained widespread recognition. In 1950, Life magazine published color reproductions of her paintings, helping to secure her place in American art history.

Augusta Metcalfe was later honored by the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame. Her legacy is preserved at the Augusta Metcalfe Museum, located on the original Corson-Metcalfe ranch near Durham, Oklahoma, where her spirit and love for the land continue to inspire.

As the semester comes to an end, we want to honor our wonderful Oklahoma Educators! 🍎

Lucy Jeston Hampton served as a professor of history at the University of Central Oklahoma for 48 years, from 1910 until her retirement in 1958. After earning her Life Certificate from Southwestern State College in 1909, she began her career as principal and history teacher at Clinton High School. At just 23, she joined the UCO faculty, where she inspired generations of students to question, explore, and engage deeply with history.

Hampton was a pioneer in using primary sources in the classroom, believing they empowered students to become more thoughtful and informed citizens. Her teaching style was rigorous, students recalled that she “required perfection,” “demanded accountability,” and “made them think before they spoke.”

She witnessed history firsthand, most notably in 1913 when she served as the alternate presidential electoral messenger for President Woodrow Wilson’s first inauguration. In 1915, she founded the Historical Society to integrate original source materials into education. Her vision led to the creation of the Laboratory of History Museum in Evans Hall, a place she saw as essential to learning, “a laboratory” for history, much like those in the sciences.

The Lucy Jeston Hampton Papers document her legacy through personal correspondence, lecture notes, and records of her many achievements. They offer invaluable insight into the early history of UCO and the development of its historical archives and museum.
