We are back! We are celebrating 10 years of Xfest by presenting five audience favorites to present new shows! Hope you can join us next week for five nights of amazing alternative theater and dance on campus! And our first show is the show that started it all. Ten years later "Whammy!" returns to the Metcalf, new and improved!

Monday, Sept 9 - YoungLiars present "Whammy!"

The agony and the ecstasy of "self-help" get a delirious makeover in this madcap multi-media dance-theatre extravaganza. Part 1960s dance party and part Nietzschean nightmare, Whammy! prods and probes the American fever dream where Dr. Phil, Diazepam and daily affirmations crash headlong in sexual addiction, su***de and The Shirelles. WTF? Want to know the seven secrets to a sane self? You know you do! And there’s only one way to find out! The show that started it all. Whammy! was the opening production of the inaugural Xfest. Ten years later the show (which has been presented in St. Louis, Columbus and NYC) returns – re-imagined and re-cast, featuring SIUE Theater Dance alums and faculty.

"Whammy! packs a hell of an existential punch to the gut – or a hell of a punch to the existential gut, I’m not sure which. In a word, the emotional experience of Chuck Harper’s piece is endlessly fascinating."
nytheatre.com

"This piece truly had me nearly in tears and laughing out loud moments later; it also left me thinking about the nature of psychology. Warning: The show contains a banana o**y. Don’t worry about what that means."

Deeply Rooted Dance Theater
Friday, Sept 14, 7:30 Dunham Hall

Drawing from the companies repertoire, Deeply Rooted Dance Theater presents an evening of short pieces including “Desire”, “When Men”, “Lambs,” and the companies signature pieces, “Church of Nations” & “Heaven”.

“Deeply Rooted is the city’s answer to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, yet with a profile very much its own… spiritual fervor, physical prowess, and sheer, unalloyed joy in movement.” (Hedy Weiss, Chicago Sun Times)

“This dance event went well beyond how well choreographer Kevin Iega Jeff makes dance, or how technically competent the company is. This was an ecstatic rite…remarkable.” Sally R. Sommer, The Village Voice

Chicago’s Deeply Rooted Dance Theater is rooted in traditions of American and African-American dance, storytelling, and universal themes that spark a visceral experience and ignite an emotional response in diverse audiences worldwide. DRDT collaborates with nationally renowned choreographers, across the spectrum of modern, ballet, and African dance, to reflect contemporary voices. In Chicago, the company has performed at numerous renowned venues including the Auditorium Theater, the Shubert Theater, The Dance Center of Columbia College, The Harris Theater for Music and Dance, and the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts. In November 2017 DRDT will host its 20th Anniversary finale at Chicago’s newly renovated Studebaker Theater at the Fine Arts Building.

"Eddie Poe" by The Coldharts
Thursday, Sept. 13, 7:30pm, Metcalf Theater

Eddie Poe is a two-person dark, musical, comedy created and performed by Katie Hartman and Nick Ryan, in collaboration with Mark Benzel. It is a stand-alone sequel to their award-winning, Off-Broadway show Edgar Allan. It follows a sixteen year old Edgar Allan Poe during his first year at the University of Virginia, as he attempts to distinguish himself among the scholarly elite… but he soon finds his old compulsions difficult to control on a campus filled with temptation. Eddie Poe is a dark, comedic riff on the mania, the addictions, and the society that haunted the life and work of America's first professional writer.

"(Eddie Poe) is in many ways their most mature work, more thoughtful and with a broader scope than their previous shows. The Coldharts deserve their rabid following… Don't miss it."
Cincinnati City Beat

Type/Caste by Rotimi Agbabiaka
Wednesday, Sept 12, 7:30 Metcalf Theater

In Lagos, Nigeria, a young boy tries on his mother’s wedding dress and discovers a liberating world of make-believe. His dreams of a dazzling theatrical career bring him to America, where he discovers that he’ll first have to leap over obstacles placed by an industry that isn't always welcoming to applicants who are neither white nor straight. In his hilarious new solo show, San Francisco Mime Troupe and Beach Blanket Babylon veteran Rotimi Agbabiaka shape-shifts from character to character and uses monologue, song, dance, and drag to embody, explore, and expose the battles minority artists fight in the exclusive world of mainstream American theatre

It's almost here!

Tuesday, Sept 11 - Ten Directions presents:
"Bouffon Glass Menajoree"

Gentlemen callers beware: The Wingfields plume their nest with broken glass, twisted morals, and perverted minds. Each night a new audience member will get to play the role of Jim, the gentlemen caller. Tom, Amanda and Laura claim no responsibility for hurt feelings or offended sentiments. These deformed anti-clowns subversively take the p**s out of everyone and everything. Why would anyone do this to an American Masterpiece!?!

“Wickedly subversive and electrifyingly interactive parody.”
Peter Crawley, The Irish Times
