The Department of Historical Studies at SIUE offers a vibrant curriculum in both undergraduate and graduate studies. Our undergraduate majors can earn a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science in history, certification to teach the Social Sciences at the secondary level, and certification in Museum Studies. All majors complete a senior capstone research thesis under the guidance of our faculty i

n a seminar setting with other majors. Students with degrees earned in history go on to teach at the secondary level, or pursue advanced training in history, law, or other fields. Students leave our program with a firm education in the liberal arts and have excellent communication and critical thinking skills. SIUE also offers a PhD program in conjunction with its sister university in Carbondale. Our graduates take their solid foundation in history to acclaimed programs throughout the country.

[One more update, this time from Caroline, one of this semester's outstanding undergraduate interns 🤩]

"I spent my semester-long internship at the Madison County Historical Society. I worked primarily with Madison County’s Poor Farm documents, including the registries, hospital records, and dead book. I worked to scan the records on a book scanner, donated by WashU, and then renamed the files so they could be uploaded to the historical society website. I also spent time working in their newly reopened museum and doing research for their upcoming exhibit: Buildings of a Bygone Era."

[Below is another update from one of our amazing undergraduate interns this semester!]

Hello! My name is Bradley Overmyer, I am a history major at SIUE and currently an intern at the Glen Carbon Heritage Museum. This semester I have updated and reorganized the Museum’s military exhibit, showcasing local veterans' uniforms, medals, and stories. I have also included sections dedicated to the citizens of Glen Carbon and their contributions to the war effort and the Doughboy Memorial, a statue dedicated to the soldiers who lost their lives fighting for our country. This internship has taught me a lot about museum and archival work and has given me insight into what career path I might travel on after graduation.

**Below is an update from a history major completing an internship this semester!**

Hello! I am Amber Speitel, a history major at SIUE with a concentration in applied historical methods (AHM). I am currently an intern at the Glen Carbon Heritage Museum in Glen Carbon, Illinois. This internship has allowed me to gain insights into a possible career path after graduation and to become proficient in many areas of museum and archival work.

I have helped set up an interactive exhibit that invites children to learn about the history of grocery stores in the town. I have also set up a display at Glen Carbon Village Hall that shows the history of voting in the area and have helped with several community events such as Ghosts of Glen Carbon and school field trips. I am currently inventorying a new collection that a community member recently donated to the museum. Not only have I seen the larger community aspect of museum work, but I have also worked with archival tools, including Past Perfect and Epson Scanner. This is a great opportunity to gain further insight and knowledge about possible career paths prior to going into a professional field.
