Last night, I participated in "A Celebration of Student Excellence 2026", an event put together by the College of Arts and Sciences in recognition of the quality of the students who were awarded scholarships from their departments or programs. Coree Keagy is the recipient of INTS's Ambassador Hussein Moussawi International Travel Scholarship, in value of $500, which she can use to cover some of her costs for studying abroad.
We were joined in the celebration by Mrs. Moussawi and her daughter in law, Dr. Elza Ibroscheva, Associate Provost - Accreditation, Assessment, and Academic Planning and Professor of Mass Communications.
Congratulations to Coree!

Last Thursday, on April 9, we had fun watching the film "Monos" on the third day of SIUE's Spanish Film Festival, a collaboration between the International Studies program, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, and the SIUE Hispanic/Latinx Faculty and Staff Association. The festival is done under the aegis of Pragda, Spain Arts and Culture, and the Secretary of State for Culture of Spain.
Students are starting to come in greater numbers at our weekly meetings! There are only two more days in which you can see Latin movies with us: April 9 and April 15. The next movie, "Zafari", will be shown in MUC, Mississippi/ Illinois rooms, on April 9, from 5pm, and on April 15, we will have 5 (five) movies shown in the same rooms, following this schedule:
9 am: From the land to your table - 2011 (1 h 47 mins)
11 am: Black Bread (Pa negre) - 2011 (1 h 48 mins)
1 pm: Everybody leaves (Todos se van) - 2015 (1 h 47 mins)

Psssst! We are watching the movie "Monos" tonight from 5 pm in the John C. Abbott Auditorium (room 0044 in the Lovejoy Library)! Will you join us?
This is the film synopsis: A crossroad between Apocalypse Now, Lord of the Flies, and Embrace of the Serpent, Alejandro Landes’ Monos tracks a young group of soldiers and rebels who run wild in the mountains of an unspecified South American country, while keeping watch over an American hostage, Doctora. The teenage commandos perform military training exercises by day and indulge in youthful hedonism by night, an unconventional family bound together under a shadowy force known only as The Organization. After an ambush drives the squadron into the jungle, both the mission and the intricate bonds between the group begin to disintegrate. Order descends into chaos and, within Monos, the strong begin to prey on the weak in this vivid, cautionary fever-dream.
In his awe-inspiring third feature, Landes examines the chaos and absurdity of war from the unique perspective of adolescence in a way that feels wholly original, thrusting his diverse young cast into an unforgiving, irrational, and often surreal environment where anything can happen — even peace. The film’s sense of surreal menace is amplified by Mica Levi’s discordant soundscape and Jasper Wolf’s
cinematography.
