Community resilience is built long before a crisis happens.
The SIU System Office of Community Engagement participated in a regional emergency preparedness exercise alongside first responders, schools, public agencies, and community partners earlier today. The experience was part of OCE’s broader work to better understand how Southern Illinois communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies and disasters.
At OCE, we believe strong communities are built through relationships, collaboration, and shared learning. Whether the challenge is severe weather, flooding, public health concerns, or public safety emergencies, recovery and resilience depend on trusted partnerships across sectors.
These experiences help strengthen our understanding of how universities can support communities not only during emergencies, but also in the long-term recovery and resilience-building work that follows.
What does a resilient community look like to you? What partnerships or resources do you think are most important for Southern Illinois communities to thrive during difficult times?
We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
